hey I am new here, been lookin through the boards for a few days but I have a couple questions. I am looking at getting a 2001 dakota quad cab 4.7 auto, 4x4, sport, with 42,000 miles on it, a body lift and 32 or 33" tires from a friend of mine. Is there anything I should look at on the truck before I buy it? anything I should know about it? do those miles seem high? I haven't ever really been into dakotas but I really like this one. oh he is selling it for that new honda element, which I don't like at all but if I can get a new truck for me it's all good. anyway he has the body lift, tires, dual exhaust, airrade intake, tint all around and new head unit, it's in great condition and he is asking 21,000, this seems high to me because blue book is quite a bit lower, I think I am going to offer 18 and I am pretty sure he will take it but does all this look ok? anything I should check out before I buy it? thanks
-Mike

ask how many of those 42k are on those tires, probly needs new ball joints and you can bet the rotors are a tad warped but neither of those are a big deal just make sure he pays for it. 21 seems like a solid deal but try to get him down anyhow. If he raised and put 33's on it he probly has some type of exhaust setup, look to see if it's the aluminized crap, if so have the pipes replaced from the cat back b/c if there is not a leak/crack now there will be very soon assuming he's had that setup for at least 20k miles. (that will only run about 100 bucks so again no biggie, just a pain to get hit with these things after the fact) and although he's your friend, cough up the 20 bucks to get a carfax report ran on it to see if he or the previous owner has ever been in an accident.

hope that helps man, I have an r/t so I don't know much about what to look out for on a 4x4 setup... I'm sure you'll get great feeback from some of the other members here.

the tires don't have too many miles on them, he just got it done before the summer, and he is the original owner and I have know him since he got it so I am pretty sure the carfax is clean. thanks for the reply so far, keep them coming

I'm not an auto tranny fan, but, the QC, with the 4.7, is really sweet-I've got one. The HO cams will do much more than all those mods you listed, for less $.

I only paid 23,000 out the door for my quad, loaded, with trailer towing, SLT interior, Infinity stereo, etc.-that's WITH TT&L! I guess the 4x4's are more $. I only paid invoice for everything for my 01 QC 4.7.

I'd try and talk him down some, go with the wholesale book value, and while the lift, tires, etc. are nice, they really don't increase the book value at all, just personal add ons.

yea I know the add ons don't really do much for the value so I think 18,000 is pretty fair. I still have to tell him my offer and see if he wil take it but so far it looks like I will be getting it. could you tell me a little more about these HO cams, sounds good to me I just need to know how much and where to get one and any other info about them you can give me would be great. thanks

Mike,

There is LOTS, and LOTS, of inexpensive performance mods, from some very serious people with the 4.7.

From a forum user here, I had my Ho cams shipped from the dodge dealer in Wakefield R.I. for about $120-for the pair.

Installed with another aquaitance I met here on this forum, who lives in my suburb of Houston.

Do some searches on this site, read up awhile, you'll learn a bit, I certainly did.

Whats nice, is that this thing is fast stock! As we used to say back in my motocross days:
Wrap it out!

Good luck on the buy if it goes, talk him down all you can, he should expect that.
