Subject: Rattling sound IP: Logged
Message: 2 minutes after starting engine I'm getting a rattling sound from the front of the motor, I replaced pulleys,water pump,fan clutch and the problem still persists can anyone please tell me what the problem is.
this is a 97 with a 3.9 v6

Message: It's probably the timing chain tensioner. It will be quiet until the oil warms up and then it will begin to rattle. The Haynes manual does not show it.
Pull off the harmonic balancer and timing chain cover, and inspect the timing gears and chain. If they have too much play, the chain will slap against the inside of the cover. You should see witness marks.
If it is a worn chain and gears, do not put off replacement. The cam gear will wear out enough to jump time. Then you have a much bigger ($$$) problem.
Don't let anyone tell you that you don't really need the tensioner; that it came without one. There was no tech bulletin that I'm aware of, but Dodge magically began putting tensioners on later model years.
Get the tensioner and new timing set.
