I had a 98 dak V6 with 112000 miles (just traded it in for a 2002 dak 4.7) on it and the only thing I did was slap new pads on the front, never had the rotors turned and nevered looked at the rear drums. and I pulled a trailer. I'm guessing in 98 they put great brakes on the trucks

The brakes on my 2000 quad cab get changed almost as often as I get my oil changed. It would seem Dodge has made an error with rotor size and Quad cab weight. But It looks like they built too many units to make the fix cost affective, Just like Firestone, Chrysler will need a lot of consumer blood on the road to even pretend they know about this issue.
So it seems the dumb consumer will have to flip the bill for there poor Engineering. Anyone else having this problem? Time to show Chrysler the consumer is not as dumb as they would like us to be. Do I smell a class action suit? Opps it’s on the web now. Wonder what the pencil neck geek will do now.
Tune in and see

i have also had the problem with the front rotors warping. i bought my truck used with 32000 miles on it. the rotors were severely warped when i got it. i put new ones on and within 2000 miles of driving they were beginning to get warped. i got a new set from autozone and they are going on 1500 miles now and are beginning to start to shake alittle already. the warranty on the rotors used to be a 2 year replacement until a few months ago, now it is only 3 months. no wonder, probably everybody getting new ones all the time because of them warping. goto brembo.com, they sell a conversion kit for the dakotas. thats the next thing i'm buying for mine.

This is a 2000 4X4 Quad cab with 50,000+ miles on it. I commute to work 90% interstate driving. I follow the operators’ manual to the letter on maintenance schedules. I can with little to no problems get 200,000 miles plus out of each truck. Last two trucks I used went thru 1 set of rotors per 100,000 miles. So it must be the way you drive is BS. Just take a visit to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web site and check out the Office of Defects Investigation Recall Campaigns Database. The Dodge Dakota has over 70 complaints on this issue alone in the last 12 months. This is just from people who have found this government web site, and have lodged a complaint. The sneaks at Chrysler were hiding this engineering screw-up until this database started to fill up. So as conciliation they will reevaluate the brakes on the next year Dakotas and make the necessary engineering changes to the braking systems. In the mean time the poor suckers who bought their sub standard workmanship will have to shell out the fix $$ themselves. Or as one of the letters I received from Chrysler told me “By one of our new and improved models next year” NOT!

Rotors are causing problems for the second time
on my 2000 Dakota QC at 28K. (Never had rotor problems on any other vehicle.) I filed my NTHSA report, complained to the service mgr. and called Chrysler directly. They are "reviewing" it, but in the meantime the dealer won't fix them unless I pay.

So, two questions:

1: What's the preferred after-market replacement for the piece'o'crap stock rotors?

2: Where do I sign up for a class action suit?

Thanks,
Thomas

I went thought the same problem. At 16000 miles, I complained about the rotors and brakes. The service department indicated that the braking system is not covered under the 3yr/36000 miles. Since they are a WAREABLE item, they are only covered fro 12 months/12000 miles. Its funny, every other mechanic that I have spoken with has told me that rotors are NOT a wearable item.
And to top this all off, rotors and brakes for my 2001 Dak Sport are not available for aftermarket.

DavidG,

Unfortunatly, i got the same song and dance. buyt i only had 10,000k or so on them at the time. so i got new ones... they left the pads though.

I dunno why they left the pads, if one was bad, i would think they are both bad. i dunno. im at 16,000 now, and i havent had any problems... although, there MIGHT be a few come near the 12,000 warranty end on the parts... ***EVIL SINISTER LAUGHTER*** Heh Heh Heh...

ALso have the warped rotors and drums, plan is to get away from the OEM nonsense, buy aftermarket, and copy the invoice and shove it up Dieter Zitche's rectum, sideways with NO lube.
If I feel like it, I will take both rotors and shove them down his throat too! Just for the h*ll of it.
I had mine replaced FOUR TIMES guys!
Sounds like total junk to me.
Thanks NAFTA!

Can someone point me to any Canadian agencies that might be able to help with this problem?

I also had to replace warped rotors at 30K kilometers and was told there is no warranty as the rotors are a maintenance item.

The truck is a 2001 Dakota Ext Cab Sport.

Letters to Chrysler get the usual run around that they are sorry they can't help, but feel the warranty is fair. I can't be replacing rotors at this rate! There has to be other avenues I can go to for levelling a complaint against Dodge. This kind of performance is not acceptable. The brake pads were only 20% worn.

The gas mileage is also beyond pathetic. I know people with full size Rams and GM trucks getting 20% better fuel economy.

Any leads would be appreciated. Failing that just pass the word around that Dakota's are junk. I will never buy another.

Bart

I have a Dakota Extended Cab Sport and am about to have another rotor/brake repair at 31,000 after having the first done at 10,000 miles. It's funny because the first time Dodge had told us the cause was that I was parking on a hill. I don't have a hill of any kind anywhere near here, the second time I took it to Dodge, it was because I was braking too hard?!? The first time they fixed the rotor free of charge as a 'courtesy', now they want to charge $566.00. My other mechanic who is an authorized mechanic for Dodge quoted me $288.00 for everything, including labor. Summary: service bad, prices outrageous!

Just reported my warping rotors on my 2000 4x4 ext. cab Dakota to NHTSA.

I'd go into details, but I'd sound like a broken (warped?) record repeating everyone else's problems (every 3000 miles, dealer says power braking, towing, etc...)

Boy, am I glad I found all of you... I was beginning to think I was loosing my mind. I have had my rotors replaced 4 times... the 1st time at 12,000 miles and approx. every 6,000 miles after that in just the last year and 90% of my driving in on the interstate. I have been luck enough that the dealerships I have worked with have replaced everything at no cost. I am going to post my complaint at NTHSA and then getting aftermarket parts.

Thanks for the info.

I was actually looking for some brake replacement tips for my 2000 Dakota 4x4 when I found this site. WOW ! Anyone with some vehicle replacement tips instead? I hate learning too late, but the guys at Daimler/Chrysler can rest assured that I will freely share my feelings (and this site) with EVERYONE I know who is thinking of making the same purchase mistake.
