Subject: Poping Noise (HELP!)
IP: Logged

Message:
Can anyone tell me what a poping noise could be. I happens when the truck makes turns when braking. I hear it on both front sides of the truck. Some times hear it when I hit pot holes.Had it back to the dealer 6 times and they cant find it and tell me the front end is solid and sound. This can't be a normal sound. It seems to get worse as time goes on. The control arms were lose before and after torqing, it went away for two weeks but noise return. Has anyone experience this and did you resolve it? Appreciate if you can help.

Like many others with dakotas, I had the same problem. After getting it checked out in a couple shops it almost went away. Now it does it lightly every blue moon. I guess I just got lucky or whatever it was that made the sound broke and I dont know it yet.

I have had this problem and it turns out that the upper left and right ball joints are shot. I had both of them replaced before I even had 30,000 miles on the truck. If you need more information you can email me at claytand1@aol.com

Had a similar thing...the dealer told me it was two parts that go together in the steering (they fit one inside the other) that don't quite fit so they rattle around. I have had the control arms tightened, repalced, ball joints tightened...drives me batty!!!

i had a similar problem. There was a bolt loose on my A arm. It was a very rare problem. When i would go in reverse and hit the brake, it would make a loud pop. Sometimes two of them. And then when i went forward it made another pop. Upon further inspection i found out the bolt was loose. When i called a dodge mech he told me he has never heard of such a thing, and that the bolt is a locking bolt and has no clue as of how it could possibly come loose.

Yes I have this popping problem when I turn left, on the left front. I took back several times under warrenty. They thought it was the coil spring first then a rubber pc. at coil. They said a day before my warrenty ran out that they couldn't find it & they were done. I truely believe it's in the rack -n- pinion steering that mounts on the front cross frame, but i haven't had it looked at since. I was told by a mech. that 92's to 95's had a recall on front end. Thats why I'm here to look for recall info.

There was a poping noise coming from my Dakota. I had the techs at work look in to it. They found that when I turned the wheel the bump stops were coming in to play and that was what I was hearing. Not satisfyied with this I found a TSB on the steering coloumn something about it was set to tight at the factory (pre load) I had this TSB preformed and I have been satisfied since

took my 98 ext. cab to the dealer for a noise from where you describe it sort of, they have found a few newer models that have had a problem with the steering linkage. they replaced mine and the noise has been eliminated. get your dealer to check there

It's the left A arm. They replaced mine and I inspected the old one and it is being manufactured bad. They also replaced about 20 other things trying to find the problem. Since they didn't want to believe me the first time when I told them what the problem was.
