I have a 2000, SLT 4x4 with a 4.7L automatic (extra cab)with 21,000 miles on it. I WAS getting about 14 or 15 mpg in the city. Then, I think I got a bad tank of gas and the mpg droped to 12.5 or so. So, then I put some gas treatment in with a new batch of "good" gas and that helped a little bit...I am back up to 13.5 now but still not as "good" as it was. Any suggestions to fix this? The tires are all properly inflatted, I had the fuel injectors cleaned 5000 miles ago. I have a K&N air filter in there now, would it help if I made the air intake larger in the filter box? Also, my idling seems to have gotten a lot rougher. The service rep. at Dodge told me that now that the engine in broken in, it is natural for the 4.7 L to idle rough when it is cold. Is this true? If so, that is fine, but if not...how do I get this fixed?

How long should one go between injector cleanings?

I have the same truck as you. I have a K&N filter at the end of an Air Raid cold air intake tube and a Flowmaster cat-back system. Before I got these mods I was getting about 13.5-14.5 MPG. Now I get around 14.5-15.5 MPG. I'm right at about 19,000 miles. The engine does NOT idle rougher than the day I bought it. The gas mileage that you get should NOT go down as the engine breaks in. If anything you should be getting slightly better gas mileage. Maybe you damaged the engine with the "bad" gas. How bad was it? Was it sitting for awhile or what? Contaminated?? Are you stomping on the gas a little more with the K&N filter on now? You'll be amazed at how much stomping on the gas a few times during a "gas filling period" will affect the mileage you get.

Ross, my bad idle just happened one day...it didn't slowly get bad. About 19,500 is when it started doing it. However, when the weather is warm there is no problem. My "bad" gas was simply purchased from a less-than-reputable station here in town and it had water in it. I drive the truck every day, mostly short trips, but I get it on the highway on the weekends and the millage goes up to 16 or 17 department. The funny thing is, when I tow my boat, the millage doens't change.

And, yes, I have noticed that an occassional stomping effects the gas a lot. I keep a close eye on the computer in the cab and I know what happens! As far as the cold-air induction and dual exhaust...maby some day (the exhaust before the cold air)...how much was the exhaust. If I could gain an extra mile or two a gallon...that would add up really fast with a 20 gallon tank.

keep me posted.

Have you had any problems with your stereo shorting out or your break drums warping?

Steve I also have the same truck, mine has 30,000 and I to have had injection cleaning.Keep in mind my mileage is all highway(sales rep big territory) I got 19 mpg the last time I checked, and so far I have no rough idle and no brake problems, but the miles I put on are a lot easier on a truck than city miles. My mileage started out at 17 and slowly improved. And that 19 mpg had absolutely no hard accelleration on it.I have 3.55 gears and the smaller P235 tires.

My 97 3.9 cc SLT plus bone stock 'cept for 255/70R15's BFG Radial TA's all around and a extang tunow cover w/45,00 on the clock gets 21 on the hiway and I can prove it. The bigest milage improvement came when this Badboy had 5,00 on it and I had the alignment reset. It was so bad there was only one way it got that way, it come from the factory that way. Nuthin was bent and it was never driven into a curb or a chuckhole.

I have a 2000 Quadcab 4.7L engine with 33000kms on her. My gas mileage is doing fine at 525kms/tank (90L tank) the best I ever got was 680kms/Tank all hwy driving. Your gas mileage will get a bit better but being a 4X4. Don't be suprised if it doesn't. Your rough idle problem check your local dealer there is a TSB for it, they need to update your Power Control Module=PCM. I had a rough idle when starting in the morning my idle was all over the place. But once I got the PCM updated no more problems. Good Luck!

Well, it really makes no difference because I have the 5.9 in the QC 4x4 and 3.55's. I romp the hell out of it and I am getting 11.5mpg in the city and see 16 -17mpg on the highway. Put the Gibson split rear catback and that is it. Miles per gallon has not changed but the smiles per mile have. Truck sounds great and runs like a scalded dog. As for the liter and kilometer stuff, I lost my calculator to do the conversions. I am happy to hear that the "new", more fuel effecient engine is having the same problems. Did you say you get the same mileage while towing your boat too? It must be a dingy or something is wrong....especially if I am getting close to the same mileage with the 5.9 and running the hell out of it.

I'm towing a 18' cruzer. It weighs about 3700 lb dry and has a 650lb tongue weight. And, I do run it hard. I am getting up to 3 miles per gallon better than you in the city so I don't feel too much worse now. However, a lot of people have mentioned the catback deal. I like the idea of a louder v-8 and more fuel efficiency? Can you e-mail me on the side and tall me what the involves?
Is that the same as dual exhaust?

tony there is a heck of a lot of difference between your 90 and steves 2000 you are not even running the same block let alone vehicle excecpt it says Dodge on the side. In 93 Dodge came out with the magnum engines that are so different internally that most of the valve train parts are not interchangeable with the older Chrysler engines (source- MOPAR performance Parts 2001 catalog). The problem sounds more like a bad sensor or a messed up computer.

I did a test for one month after the exhaust was put on, put back in the oem filter milage was better but power was off. I aslo try to run super unleaded, as much as I can. While this is not needed I proceive more power from the better gas. At last count I was close to 400 miles a fillup

I notice this post is getting a little old but I thought I'd add my 2 cents...

I have a 2000 with the 4.7 auto and have had a rough idling issue for quite a while. Dealer did a computer update last week and here's what it did:

- no rough idle
- WAY better gas mileage
- consistant power

Dealer said it was a newer update and that they now have a TSB on it...

I have the same truck as Steve in the first post. All stock, no mod's whatsoever with just 3,000 miles. Daily commute is all 2 lane twisty road, 30 to 60 mph differential and I'm seeing 15.5 to 16.5 m/g. Low end mileage is if I "stomp" on it in the only passing area on the 26 mile (0ne way) commute. I'm happy with the mileage right now only because for the first 500 to 700 miles I was lucky (praying in the cab) if I got 12 m/gallon!
Chris, do you have the TSB # for the computer update your dealer did? I'm wondering if it's applicable to the 2001 4.7 auto.

TIA,
Ken Grierson

Who in their right mind thought that trucks would get good milage? I have one of these dodge dakotas (1999) and it has problems (prior owner dumped gas from a can and contaminated the truck). Injectors have been replaced, can not even get to the fuel filter, and has slightly rough idle in the AM. I like the truck though. It is nice to be able to haul stuff compared to my old Intrepid. By the way, I had a 1975 chevy that got the same milage whether loaded or not. later for now

Everyone knows that you're not going to get good milage in a 5500lb truck swinging a V-8. That said....

I have 110,000 on my 2000 4.7 qc. I've run into a few things that cause milage to drop, and there are no TSB's for them.

Twice I've had to replace the fuel pump because the original design was faulty. My latest replacement was at 85,000mi. DC redesigned the fuel pump. Ask to have a manual guage put onto the fuel rail and read that way. it's the only way to check for a fuel pressure problem.

The throttle position sensors don't last real long either. They begin to float or stick. Watch for rough idle or especially a high RPM idle and for Idle hunting (idle jums 250 to 1250 rpm for no reason.

I started this problem at 22k miles and it wasn't finally resolved till 95k miles when I started receiving multiple bad injector and sparkplug faults.

Now with all that taken care of... I've had a drop in MPG again I need to figure out. I've only hit 18mpg tank average twice. I do a lot of interstate driving (no, realy state to state). Normally I'll get 16 mpg. Lately, I've only been getting 12. (90% of all my driving is highway). I don't have a heavy foot, and keep my seat all the way back so I cant mash the pedal unless I really need to.

There is a lot that can affect these engines that are not monitored by sheit on the vehicle reguardless of what you friendly/clueless Dodge dealer thinks. As a mechanic, I know you cant rely on the computer which is all modern technicians are trained to do.

I have a 2001 V6 Dakota Quad cab with 54k. I have an intake spacer and a cold air intake with a K&N filter. (Great Power Gains) Even after these mods, my gas mileage was at 16-17mpg but a few weeks ago it dropped to about 12-13mpg. This sucks. I heard it may have something to do with the gas in California. (They change the blend for summer time) Screw air quality, I want better gas mileage.

...Anyone think changing the spark plugs, wires and distributor cap would help?

P.S. I run 89 octain
