I have a 02 3.9 that has developed an odd steering issue. At low speeds it whines like crazy when I steer in either direction, and it gets worse when I begin to accelerate. I had it into the delaer a year ago and they insisted it was nothing more than the fluid needing to be changed. Changing the fluid helped for about a year, and now the same thing is happening. Could this possible be a larger issue with the rack and pinion? Or does the fluid break down that badly?

Checked the fluid level. It may be low and that will cause it to whine.

Thanks,

Well, it is low because of a leaking Steering Rack. I had the same issue a year ago while the truck was under warranty, but just now does the dealer inform me of the problem. I am trying to convince them to cover it under warranty as a reocurring issue, but I don't know what luck I will have with it.

You just got the old Dodge Dealer Warranty Burn. They find a problem and band aid it until after your warranty is up.

They must get a kick back for this?

good luck all dealerships do this. when its warranty work they are only paied for what DC thinks it will take to replace the part. now off warranty they can charge you whatever they want. it sucks and why I odnt take a car to a dealership after the warranty is over. local mechanics can do just as good of a job as the dealerships and cheaper too. I know dodge wanted over $900 to replace my sisters heater core. I took it to a local mechanic and got the heater core from NAPA cost like $40 and total with labor came to like $280. they did just as good if not better than a dealership. and a major plus I had the truck back when they told me they would. unlike dealerships. also they didnt read a list of things they think should be replaced and then say when can we schedule you to bring it back in a mug your wallet some more.

I keep an eye on fluid levels and the last time I checked it was about three months ago when I replaced the spark plugs and the power stearing was about 3/4 way down or so when hot. About two weeks ago my vehichal started to make a whistling noise like a vacume line was leaking. However, there was no problems with any hose under the hood. Then about 5 days latter the noise got much worse and made a horrible noise when I would make turns. I checked everything and noticed the fluid leve when hot was just above the bottom of the stick. I thought hay there is little fluid but it is there. However, this was not the case, I decided to put some in the powersteering and low and behold it was about 8 ounces low. Go figure that the stick showed some and there was nothing (cept maybe splash).
