PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Daimler Chrysler will offer a 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty on upper ball joints on 400,000 2000-2003 vehicles not covered by this recall... I assume that means the 2 wheel drive vehicles.

DETROIT (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler division said on Friday it was recalling about 600,000 Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks because of concerns about their safety.

Chrysler had disclosed on Thursday that U.S. federal safety regulators had asked it to recall the vehicles from the 2000 to 2003 model years. Some of the SUVs and trucks have had problems with an important suspension joint that Chrysler has blamed on corrosion in northern states where salt is used to clear roads of ice.

On Friday, Chrysler said an internal investigation has shown that the front suspension upper ball joints on some vehicles may be subject to corrosion and progressive wear.

It acknowledged that "in extreme cases" the corrosion problem could lead to "separation of the front suspension."

Chrysler said no substantiated reports of injuries had been linked to the recall.

The car company said front suspension upper ball joints on the vehicles would be replaced at no cost to their owners.

In addition to the recall, which industry analysts expect to be a costly one for Chrysler, the company said it would offer an extended 10-year or 100,000 mile warranty on the suspension upper ball joints on 400,000 2000-2003 Durangos and Dakotas not affected by the safety action.

Only four-wheel drive versions of the Durango and Dakota are affected by the recall.

I also heard that Chrysler would reimburse owners who paid out-of-pocket to get the ball joints replaced.

I had Moog ball joints installed on my 2001 4x4 earlier this year. Think they'll reimburse me for fixing their problem for them???

Anyone know why this only targets 2000+? What's different from the 1997-1999 models? Or are those owners expendable.

Finally our voices have been heard. Last year I went round and round with my dealer about the noise from my ball joints after I first heard of an proposed class action lawsiut regarding the durangos. The last thing they told me was that the issue was only focused on the durangos because they don't use the same ball joints that of the dakotas. They told me that my ball joints where with in specs. Yeah! OK you SOB's. So, I held out hopeing for something like this to happen. He he , it paid off! Recalls will be issued next month. My dealer has no option. Suckers!

OK, where are the written specifics now that it is official?

Surely somebody has called or stopped by the dealer on the way home from work.

Is my 2wd QC covered? I hear noises and it has 96,000+

What good is a 10 yr. warantee if you crash and it causes damage or death? Is that for 2wd?

What is different from the 2wd than 4wd for them not to be recalled as well? Different supplier?

With 600,000 plus out there somebody has more answers than I have seen on this forum.

Might just be different stresses on 2WD models. You can find much more info on some of the other forums.

What other forums, I am going through them now. I have read and watched NBC, CBS, & NBC. I also like many other what to know why not the 1999 and 2WD. Mine is a 1999 4x4 and my front axel bearing went in August and have been watching since then about the spensenion and this whole controversey. I know many 99's and 2WD's that have gone also. Where do I find the explination of why we don't fit. Anyone have an answer.

Last summer I was driving home from the Jersey shore when I heard this noise coming out of the front end before i could even say to myself "what the f*#@ is that?" my tire busted off at 65mph sending the tire under my drivers side rocker panel which lifted the front end of my truck about 8 ft off the ground(per spectators) then when the truck came slamming down my spindle or what was left of it dug into the asphalt lifting the rear passenger side tire off the ground practically sending me into a roll then some how it came back down and i came to a screaching halt. All said and done my girl busted her head on the roof and windshield and i was out $1500 for rim, tire, spidle, rotor, axle shaft etc.

Spoke with NHTSA today 1999 Dodge Dakota and Durangos' are not included in the recall. However the number of complaints is close for them to be considered in the future. So everyone with a 1999 who has had ball joint troubles, File a complaint with NHTSA ASAP. Under a recall we can expect reimbursement for the cost of the work to repair the ball joints. But they need complaints. Web site is www.nhtsa.gov or for complaints http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

From what my dodge dealer tells me if you have a pre 2000 and under 100,000 miles it will be covered. I tend to belive him as he sends his overflow to my shop to be done. And If I do joints on it he will pay up.. ASE yeah I got them too....

I have a 2001 dodge dakota quad cab 4x4 and I had to replace a water pump for it. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this proble? I also wanted to know if the recall on the ball joints were for 4x4 trucks as well? I thank you in advance for your response.

I have a 2001 dakota with 157k miles and have heard a few pops on the front drivers side wheel area, when i turn a tight corner and straighten the wheel. Would this be a ball joint problem? Will this recall be good for my truck? I just dropped it off to a mechanic to have the oil pump changed, screen cleaned, filter and oil change for $250, after putting up with the oil pressure guage drop out problem for the last two months. I also have heard a knock underneath the engine, which worries me more. It also needs a timng chain and tensioner replaced as soon as funds will allow. How much should that cost to fix with labor?

There was a change made on that date. Changes are not always made on the same date of model year change.

So does the change in 01/03 mean that trucks built after that date do not have the ball joint failure problem?
