Finally our voices have been heard. Last year I went round and round with my dealer about the noise from my ball joints after I first heard of an proposed class action lawsiut regarding the durangos. The last thing they told me was that the issue was only focused on the durangos because they don't use the same ball joints that of the dakotas. They told me that my ball joints where with in specs. Yeah! OK you SOB's. So, I held out hopeing for something like this to happen. He he , it paid off! Recalls will be issued next month. My dealer has no option. Suckers!

Why stop at 2000? I have a 1999 Dakota 4x4, and had to replace the ball joints at around 50k miles.

You let a family member drive a vehicle that you knew was unsafe to drive? Then you come here and complain about the quality of the truck? How about repairing it so you don't endanger the lives of yourself, your sister when she drives it, your passengers and other motorists?
I DO value my life (and the lives of others) and I express that by keeping my Dakota in good repair. Try it sometime.

Handle it as you would any other needed repair on your truck and save ALL RECEIPTS. It may never happen, but it is rumored that DC could extend the recall to that year model.

they should...i have a 97' and i have had to replace mine 3 times. it only has 80k on it...at 20, 45, and last week at 80k. i really didn't want to this last time but the truck shook pretty hard when i braked, at first i thought my rotors were warped but then i remembered how bad dak ball joints are. it's so pathetic but hey it is the only problem i have had with my dak.

I have a '97 3.9L and my uppers were replaced at 26K, and the uppers AND lowers were replaced a 49K (all by dealers). I finally got smart and replaced (at 51K!!!) them myself with NON-maintenance-free-NON-dodge-pieces-of-sh*t that I can actually grease/clean, and 85K later (134K Total) they are still practically brand-new with NO play...If you want it done right, DO IT YOURSELF!!!

I also have a 1997 dakota & 1999 durango! the (DAKOTA) I had an extended bumper-bumper 100,miles and that bull! Dodge dealer admited that the yellow specks on the white paint was railroad dust, which covered the whole truck, which is small metal flakes that comes of a train when transporting it. (NO COVERAGE ON THAT)but they would buff it out for 200.00 and it would probably come back!!!! Then motor went at 104,thousand miles.
DURANGO 1999 at 50,000 had to put all 4 BALL JOINTS on or they wouldn't inspect it. thanks 600.00 bucks. which wore the tires for inspection 500.00 plus brake job which was another 400.00 with rotors and my brakes still skid like your on ice when brakes are put on fast.
GUESS I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON NO MORE DODGES!!! for me.
Thanks for listening to me gab!! Dianne

Just bought a 02 Dakota Quad Sport 4x4. I love it. Coming from an 87 F150, the Dakota is a dream. Quick, nimble, small enough to fit in a parking spot, and with factory replaced ball joints last year.... I'm diggin it so far.

Are they new ball joints any good, or are they factory replacements? Surely they wouldn't be.

The Ball Joints that I had put on my Durango was new ones with a lifetime warranty I'm pretty sure, and they must be good ones cause I have gone over 30,000 and no problems yet! and I have a monthly oil change they check them too!

Hi,
I recently imported one of the last old shape 2004 model Quadcabs into the UK. Now I'm wondering how long the ball joints are gonna last. You don't get a warranty as Dodge won't honour it outside the USA or Canada. Ok so I know you pay your money and take your chances, but is this thing dangerous?
Just for the record I am a member of the American Auto Club International,a UK based club for owners of American vehicles, and there are a good few of our members running Daks. Any info much appreciated.

Regards,

Kevin.
