Well I took my 2002 quad cab 4X4 in today (66450 kms) for the rear end making a howling noise at 80 kms/hr, When I picked up my Service Invoice in Capital Letters it stated "SHOP FORMAN ROAD TESTED = NORMAL FOR DAKOTAS AND THIS IS ONE OF THE QUIETER ONES, NOTHING MORE TO BE DONE TO DIFF."
Funny how only a month and a half ago it was doing the same thing and they replaced the Ring & Pinion.

That is one of the things which has me worried... Will my American Dak hold up? My 1/4 million mile Miata is still going strong. It even has the original battery. The driveline has never been opened up... just normal maintenance.
I'd love to hear stories about American cars doing that well. At 4,600 miles, my dak is doing ok, but will it do 250K and still be doing strong?

Same problem on my brother-in-laws Dakota - changed the fluid to 75W90 sythetic and the noise went away....

I had to have the rear end fixed at 76,000klm, still under warranty then it is a 2001 quad 4.7 now at 124,000 lkm it is going again and Chrysler won,t do anything I believe it is there problem and they should repair it under warranty, as it went out before only 48,000 lkm and there it goes again, spoke with other mech. and they indicated this should nefeer happen never mind twice within 124,00klm, can anybody sugest something to help.

Hmmm.. I had some work done on my 02 Quad dif. at 60000Km and now at 71000Km it howels from 70-90Km/hr and then is quiet. I dread going back to dealer to complain due to the distance. Now what?

I had the same problem 2002 QC dak. the mech
could not hear the rear end noise,he said it was
road noise. shop forman went for a 30 min drive
when he come back he had the mech open Diff, it was
full of metal chips, bearing failure thay had to
replace ringgear,pinon and all bearings. at 8000k
I have it in the shop now getting balljoints replaced at 54000k

There is also a grease you can add when they change the diff fluid. It's for the clutches smells like fish did it to mine quiet ever since... change my diff fluid every 10,000 miles!
