Message: Nice, I've got the same problem, 2001, 28000 miles went to dealer, got new ball joints. Going print out and bring this with me. Either they don't know, (which 15 minutes on the web fixed) or they don't care to find out. I hate dealing with dealers.

Message: Truck went in for the lower right front ball joint to be replaced; dealer thought this was causing the front end rattle. Rattle is still there, truck back in the shop.

Message: Told the dealer this several times. They said the 2001 QC doesn't have those retainer clips. They have the truck again today and will be using the acoustical ears to try and locate the noise. I also noted that my truck sounds like a diesel when I first start it up. Maybe because I start it in the garage and the sound is amplified by the walls but the engine sounds clunky. Only have 40000km on this truck.

Message: Dealer put in a new steer rack today, truck still has the rattle. The mechanic is now going to take parts off of one the new trucks on the lot and put them on my truck until the noise goes away. This is unbelievable on two counts: the dealer/mechanic going this extra mile and the fact that no one can find the cause of the rattle. Anyone have any suggestions? So far the mechanic has replaced the upper right control arm, lower right ball joint, steering rack. They have checked the brakes (no retainer clips on these they said). What else, anyone?

Message: The sound you're hearing is the brake pad bouncing around in the caliper. Go over some bumps where you would normally hear the sound and lightly apply the brake. The clanging will go away. The retaining clip is on the back of the inboard pad and is pushed into the caliper piston. Granted, I haven't read this whole thread, so I may be way off base, but, based on prior experience, a semi-trained monkey could diagnose a problem better than a well-trained dealership mechanic (and I'm almost as bright as a semi-trained monkey). Hope this helps.

Message: The mechanic said that he has Thursday off (Canada Day) and he is willing to work on my truck to fix the rattle on that day; the dealer will not pay him to do any more work so the mechanic has to do it on his own time? I questioned this and the mechanic said its the truth. I think that he is getting paid but do to the rattle no being fixed in the previous 4-5 visits, the dealer is not allowing my truck to take up other customers time in the shop. Anyway the mechanic said he would appreciate me being there the whole time; one reason is Workers Compensation Board rules that two people must be present in the shop, the second so the mechanic can show me whats going on. Its my day off too, but hey, this guy is doing it on his day off, he is willing to show me stuff on the truck and he is not giving up. Once again brakes clips fine, upper right control arm replaced, lower right hand ball joint replaced, steering rack replaced. On Thursday we will replace the left control arm, steering knuckle, and lower left ball joint all will be replaced with the parts from a 2004 on the lot; they checked and all the parts will match. What do you guys think?

Message: I HAVE AN '03 QUAD 2WD 4.7 AND I ALSO HAD A RATTLE IN THE FRONT END. I COULD FEEL IT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. I FOUND 2 THINGS. THE FIRST IS IF YOU LOOK UNDER THE DASH THE BRAKE PEDAL WHERE IT PIVITS HAS PLAY IN IT. SIDE TO SIDE AND UP AND DOWN. ON RIPPLES IN THE ROAD IT RATTLES AROUND AND SINCE IT IS MOUNTED TO A BRACKET ATTACHED TO THE STEARING COLUMB YOU CAN FEEL IT. FOR THIS TRY TO PUT A PEICE OF TUBING OR HOSE AS CLOSE TO THE BRACKET ON THE PIN AS POSSIBLE AND HOLD IT IN PLACE WITH A ZIP TIE. THIS SEEMS TO HELP SOME. THE OTHER THING I FOUND IS THAT THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BETWEEN THE STEERING COLUMB TO THE RACK HAS PLAY IN IT. THIS PART IS A SHAFT INSIDE A SLEEVE AND DUE TO THE DESIGN IT HAS PLAY IN IT. YOU CAN DO ACOUPLE OF THINGS. TRY TO PACK AS MUCH BEARING GREASE AS YOU CAN IN THE SMALL GAP OF THE ASSEMBLY UNDER THE RUBBER BOOT AS YOU CAN. OR IF YOU CAN FIND SOME FLOWABLE SILICONE OR SELFLEVELING AS IT IS SOMETIMES CALL AND DO THE SAME IT WILL STOP THE RATTLE. I DIDN'T TAKE IT APART OR REMOVE THE GREASE. I DID THIS TO MINE AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE DONE THE TRICK.

Message: Went to the dealer on 2004Jul01 and worked with mechanic on my truck. Took the calipers off; right side pad clip rusted through one prong missing completely (the clip with three prongs is what I'm talking about). When we took the left side off, the pads just about fell right out of caliper. One pad had separated from its backing plate and the clips were gone. New pads installed with some glue to hold them in place. No more rattle. Thanks to those who suggested the pad thing from the very beginning. I told the dealer this many times but they had other ideas I guess. The mechanic was awesome and wasn't going to let my truck go until the problem was solved.

Message: Ya ... the infamous brake pad rusted clip thingy. I've been driving my truck with the front end clanking away for about 25,000 miles now. I love taking it to the dealership to to get some of their $400 tranny fluid and looking at the faces of all the people that WERE considering buying a dakota before they heard my clunker pull in. :oP Glad ya found the problem.

Message: had the same front end rattle in my 2002 Dakota QC. The dodge dealer said the clips were rusted off of the pads and the rotors were severely rusted, total estimate $450. I did the job myself with ceramic pads for $100. I call the dodge customer care center and they told me they are only liable for 12 months or 12,000 miles on brake parts so take a hike, they also told me the rust is caused by the weather conditions I drive in the northeast, what a joke.

Message: Yeah, I thought I was the only one. Took my 2001 Dakota to dealer twice, first after two hours and two mechanics, they replaced the catalytic convertor. Then they said my pads had a groove in them from wear. Rattle still there, guess I'll put new pads on myself.

Message: 2001 4x4 QC 4.7l V8. Had the same rattle twice. First time after about 12 months. Took about 2 hours for the mechanic to figure it out. Clips were totally rusted away. When he pulled the pads off, water came out of the piston because it is hollow. It looks like water can get in over the top of the pad because there is a little gap, but it can't get out.

Message: Hey guys,
I think i am having the same problem you all have mentioned--with the brake clips. I hear the noise when I'm coasting, and when I apply the brake, it seems to stop.
I am also noticing a clicking feel in the steering wheel when i turn right. This happened very recently, after i noticed the brake noise. Anyone had this happen?
Also, is the brake clip issue serious/dangerous? Should i stop driving the truck or can it wait a few days until i can get to the shop?
Thanks.

Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9 and noticed
a rattling, clunking sound coming from the
front left side. I looked at all the tie
rods, sway bar links ect...Turned out it
was my brake caliper bolts/Pins stripped
out out where they screw into and caused
all the rattling. I bought Dorman Help
self tapping caliper bolts and screwed
them in. Now it's as quite as a mouse🙂
