Dealer charged me 1800 for upper and lower balljoints with extension arms(insisted they are one piece). I later called the same dealers part dept. and requested information on balljoints parts and price for same '99 Dodge Dakota. I was told that DaimlerChrysler has produced special balljoint replacement parts for a mere 100 each because of the lowlife of original parts. Service area overcharged me by more than 600 in parts alone. They must have forgotten it. Yeah, right!

I went to PepBoys and got all four ball joints (with ZERT fittings) for $192.61 (tax included).

I went home and got my die grinder and cut the old rivits, and installed my new ball joints in 4 hours.

Total cost: $192.61 and one case of beer.

Regards, ARG

Ata-boy ARG, bout time folks start doing things for them selves. That's why they are building Home Depot's like crazy, pretty soon one one every corner. My wife and I built our own home on evenings and weekends, took awhile, but cost less than half of buying a new one.

I change my own oil, have for the last 20 years. When anything goes wrong with my Quad, I will fix it myself!

STS, have you ever turned a wrench? Don't call someone "a cheap bastard" because they prefer to do the work themselves, save a buck and keep themselves from getting screwed by the mechanic or dealership.

I guess I would fit the bill of your so called cheap bastard since I would rather do the work myself and make sure it's done right at 1/4 the cost. Only thing I take my truck in for is tires and alignments. If I wasn't such a cheap bastard I would buy an alignment machine and a tire machine. Then I would never have to take my truck in.

I guess all the non-cheap bastards are at the mercies of the dealership. We all know how trustworthy car dealerships are.

Dealers are good for this kind of business. I remember when my transfer case seals were leaking and I wanted it fixed fast before a long road trip. So I took it to the dealer and was quoted over $2100 to fix my problem. They claim that because my truck has over 200k miles I need a new transfercase and front driveshaft. I was like whatever so I canceled my road trip took it to a friend and a week later all new seals for $190. I hate dealers for this crap and they should be fined for this non sense or kick the service manager in the nuts!! Needles to say my truck now has over 240K miles and works just fine!
