Please call the NHTSA. Everybody is complaining about the ball joints but no one is reporting the problem to the right people.

The e-mail I got back from the NHTSA says that the ball joint problem has been escalated to an engineering anaylsis number EA03023. This is for the Durango, but the Dakota is associated with this. This was upgraded in Nov of 2003. Do file complaints at the NHTSA. Their WEB site is

Looking at it from a slightly different angle, the balljoints are NOT a problem. They were designed to last 36,000 miles for the majority of trucks. This is a PERFECT design -- minimum cost to serve the intended purpose. The warranty is for 36,000 miles, so if the balljoint lasts that long in MOST cases, it was properly designed. If it doesn't, that is what the warranty is for. The folks at Dodge explained to me that this is not a safety hazard either, since the balljoint is in compression all of the time, it will not separate while driving, or the driver will at least have ample warning that the joint is bad before it does separate.

I'm so glad I bought a truck that has such PERFECTLY designed parts. Let's hear it for Dodge!!!!

Just caught the announcement this morning - December 10, 2004, DC is recalling Durango's and Dakota's for BJ issues. Contacted my dealership and as yet they do not have any info regarding RC. All good things to those who wait...right? - FT, complaints and media attention is the only way to get things done.

I am posting at this forum as well as others, anyone with an answer or where to go... why not prior to 2000, the 1999's are having problems also. Where do I find out why. For those of us pre 2000.

Dealerships are NOT responsible for reimbursement of these repairs. You need to contact DC. The phone number is listed in your owner's manual and in the recall notice.

If you mean that he has a 1999 Dakota and he is concenred about his ball joints not being included in the recall, then the dealership is correct...they can not include a 1999 vehicle in a recall that is only for 2000-2003.5 vehicles. It has NOTHING to do with current or previous ownership.

I also have bad ball joints on my 1999 Dodge Dakota, and I have reported it to the National Safety Transportation Board. As of today I have not had a response.
