I have had the same problem right after my warranty ran out on my '99. The Dealer said My tranny needed a new internal seal kit. $900.00 dollars later it ran better. 18 months (30,000 miles)later I'm experiencing it again. I just got in from changing the tranny fluid and filter. I also added some Gunk Transmedit to it. Drove it for 10 miles so far and it appears to be better. Not Good Mind You, but better.

I've got a 2000 R/T with that 46RE auto. And this thing drives me nuts! The one I hate the worst is and doesn't always have to be cold to get it to do it is the "STUTTER SHIFT"! It tries to go from second to third but just sort of goes back and forth between the two for a split second. And gives the truck the jitters! I took it to the dealer at about 25K and they said the bands were loose and the computer needed a update for the programing. Helped for awhile a real short while! The other thing that irks me about this tranny is the extreme difference in the gear ratio's between 1st 2nd and 3rd. This gives you that big drop in execeleration. This thing needs a 4spd auto with closer ratio's or a manual. I've become envious of the 4.7 owner's with there manual. The dealer can't blame the computer programing on it!

I have found a web site that lists some shift kits for the 46RE. Its www.levelten.com found it on another Dakota website. Don't know anyone that's tried there stuff. I've also been told that there is a kit out there that takes the shifting away from the computers control and puts it back on the traditional hydraulic/vaccum. Again just another rumor so far. I haven't been able to find anything on this kit either if it even exists or can be done. I've been interested in swapping in a T56 six speed manual into my dakota. I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet but I'm sure some one has! Just hate to loose the console and the nice little junk trays! But I'd gladly trade the stutter shifting to widely spaced gear ratio's for some 5,000 rpm gear bangin shifts! Anybody out there try this Level Ten outfit yet? Or know any good mods that work on 46RE?

I HAVE A 95 DAKOTA SPORT WITH A 318 IN IT. MINE STARTED ACTING UP AT ABOUT 20,000 MILES, EVERY TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THAT WAS THE WAY THE NEW DODGE TRANSMISSIONS WERE SUPPOSED TO SHIFT. IT WAS TO KEEP FROM HAVING HEAD JERK AT SHIFTING. AT ABOUT 60,000 IT STARTED SLIPPING OUT OF OVERDRIVE OR REFUSING TO GO INTO OVERDRIVE UNLESS I BACKED OFF THE PEDDLE AS IT WAS SHIFTING. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT AT 90,000 BY A INDEPENDENT GARAGE AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY TROUBLE SINCE. SO PERSONALLY I WOULD SAY
"IF AND WHEN" YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT FIXED DON'T LET THE DEALER DO IT, THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT IN 90,000 MILES SO I WOULD NOT TRUST THEM TO FIX IT. IT NOW HAS 170,000 WITH NO MORE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS.

99 V-6 Auto here. My dodge would not shift out of first or second gear. Did not even thing about taking it to a Stealer. Hooked up my own scan tool (JC Whitney $169.00). Come to find out it was the speed sensor that screws in from the out side of the trans.. I bought a new one $25.00. When i took the old one out it just had some builtup crap on it that kept it from working. Lets see the stealer would have charged me how much?

Don't know if yall know or not but, if you go to any good transmission mechanic and tell him it is shifting hard when it is cold he would tell you that is a sign of a strong transmission. Ask around

My 2000 R/T wash mushy always! I got it with 20K on it. I took it back to the Dealer within a weak of getting it complaining of the stutter shift and the just limp wet noodle shifts wich another sympton was the early shifting from second to third. Late model automatics do start out in second when you're not getting on it very hard from a standing start my old 65 C4 would do the same thing if left in drive its just a matter of hydraulic pressure selecting the appropriate gear for the situation. But the auto in the R/T and Dakota's for that matter are very problematic. From my experience with my Dakota the transmission was enough of a problem with out all the other gremlins. I agree with David from above don't take it to a dealer if you can keep from it! Take it to a reputable transmission shop I'm sure there are known fixs for all the problems and they can be incorporated with a rebuild or tranny upgrades. I hope Dodge will not make these same mistakes with there later model. I would hate to spend good money on a 1500 with the Hemi and have a transmission behind it that acted like the one behind my 360. Bayou I don't think that hard snap snap shifts like a true performance transmission would produce or the sudden jump from one gear to another with positive or aggressive engagement was ever a issue with these transmissions when they were cold. Because that would be a improvement! Some of this has to do with programing of the computer. They obviously haven't incorporated a compensation for cold shifting wich gives the WET NOODLE indicisive STUTTER shift or the jump through two gears shift. And even after warm up at times when you would nail it in top gear it would down shift and then just hang there, not shift up again till you let up on the throttle. Even more annoying was the one were you nail it, it down shifts and then jumps back and forth like its going back and forth between gears! Not very impressive on the freeway when you're trying to show off to the Chevy driver. Hell I think it even caused it to rev up against the rev limiter and then that combined with the shifting issue makes ya feel like you're on a damned electric bronc riding machine! Not the actions of a asphalt anialating machine that it appears to be sitting in the driveway!

Well, I can only say that I had many of the problems listed above with my 98 auto 6 cyl. It either would not shift from second to third or third to o/d. The rpm's would be at about 3-4k and it would not shift even with no hard accel, a very definite sign of problems. Also, the stutter shift thing is something that I was experiencing (im assuming that this is when the tranny shifts between gears unncecessarily). Well, I brought it into good ol AAMCO. They hook it up to the computer say that there's nothing wrong electrically, then they take it apart and say that the converter is going bad and shooting metal into the tranny. So they rebuild the tranny ($1850). Anyway, on the very day of the 10-day checkup it starts pulling the same SH&% again. Does anyone think this could be a speed sensor problem or tranny computer problem? Please help. Thanks.

Mine does something different...if I "mash" it it won't shift out of 2nd, I have to let up on the gas and it sounds to a passerby like I've shifted up with a clutch! One more surprise...I was in top gear @ about 85-90 and the rpms went from 4K to nearly 5000 in a heartbeat. I couldn't tell whether the plates lost thier grip or it downshifted. I think it was the former. If I drive easy it behaves, but it has this subtle shaking or stuttering all the time. Sound familiar to anyone?

I have a problem with my '03 quad cab. Going up on a steep grade it acted as if it had slipped out of gear completely. Making a very loud noise as if the fan was kicked in. Put on the gas and it actually just kept slowing down. Had to get off the highway let it cool for 5 minutes and started to drive okay. Did it again not 2 miles later. Checked tranny fluid all okay. Hasn't done it since but haven't pulled a hill yet. Only 4,000 miles on it. Dealer says all checks out okay.

I have a 98 Dakota Sport, V-6, with 62K miles. It was howling and/or humming in between 40-50 mph till yesterday when it hit 40 mph at full throttle, lost shifting, and rpm would be at 3-4K but not always. Sometimes it won't get shifted at 25 mph. Had to play with acceleration to get it shifted.
Please help! Thanks!

I have the same shutter shift problem in my '01 Club Cab. I bought it used and within 2 weeks noticed it. When i took it in for service, they said all the pressures in the trans were fine and that they reprogrammed the comp. The problem came back the next day. Oh well, drive it till the trans falls out, God bless warranty work :)

Seems to me there are a lot of trucks out there with the shifting problems from 2nd to 3rd. I recently had my 2000 rebuilt by a Chrysler tranny specialist and he gave the low down.

The trans in the v-6 dakotas, (also full size v-6) is based on the 904 design. This design has had some difficulties since the sixties.

An internal seal that forces the shift from second to third, has to seal on two surfaces. During cold weather, the seal shrinks and allows fluid by, thus reduceing the effecting hydraulic pressure to cause the gear shift.

After the tranny, and fluid, warms, this seal grows and will seal both the internal and external surfaces and allow normal shifting.

There is a further downfall, if your truck sees quite a bit of inner city traffic with stop and go driving, the transmission heats up (along with this seal) and causes premature wear which further compounds the problem.

Supposedly, on the 2003+ trucks, a redesign has eliminated the problem.

To everyone,I would suggest synthetic fluid to help prevent these problems. Better viscosity when cold, better stability when hot, and will reduce your tranny temp by 20-30 degrees.

Finally my shifting problem is resolved

I have a 2002 Dakota Quad 4.7 automatic 31,000 miles. Lately there has been a stutter shift from 2-3 and from 3-2 which occasionally became a very hard abrupt shift as well.

Initially I was able to duplicate for the dealer who first did a quick learn that worked for a day, second they replaced the TCM it lasted for a week, yesterday they dropped the pan and found a broken accumulator spring.

Truck runs like new again
