Subject: 01, ABS locks brake peddal prematurely
IP: Logged

Hi,
FYI, (a weird problem) every now and them if I hit the brake quick and firm, and then let off and re-apply softley the pedal will pulsate (and stick) and limit braking to about 20-30% of normall stopping power. Took a while to figure out how reproduce this problem... I first noticed it at a yellow traffic light; I hit the brake fairly hard to stop, let off for a 1/2 second thinking about going thru light, and then chicken out and tried to stop. When I tried to stop the second time I was working with less than 1/2 the normall stopping power, with the pedal feeling like it had jammed. The peddle would chatter, or just freeze, due to the ABS kicking in and only apply minamal braking power. I now can reproduce this fault fairly consistantly by tapping the brake moderately hard, let off, and then gentle re-appling. The Abs we act up about 1/2 or more of the time doing these steps.
It's something that I have gotten used to but I thought I post it on here to see if anyone else does this,,,
PS, I am discussing this with my dealer.

Addition,
It totally stock, with the 4W ABS option.
Little less than 25k miles.
FYI, this is not the pulsating of warped front rotors...

Sorry to hear of your accident,,,
I chattered into an intersection but nobody was there, lucky. I recommend to others not to get front ABS and would like to disable the front ABS on mine, must talk to dealer,,, Other problem happens in winter/spring, when one side of truck is on ice and other is on dry pavement: It just chatters and will not stop even thou one side of truck is on dry pavement... Dealer wants to see this, so I will do some demo/test driving this winter,,, Still like the truck a lot, just need to fix the brakes and ignore the low oil pressure at idle!

It is SCARY when the ABS comes on so early... WHAT IS THE FIX ??

I also have the exact same problem on my 2002 Dakota 4 X 4 Quad Cab. I've had it to two different dealerships a total of four times. On every occasion the result was "No defect found". They say the system is working as designed. After all the posts I have seen here and on the NHTSA site, I can't believe they are ignoring the problem. Does anyone know how to disable the ABS. I'd rather not have it than have it this way. Can I simply remove the 10 Amp ABS fuse? I asked the dealer and they said they forwarded my question to Chrysler. Still haven't gotten a response.

you can disable the rear ABS by removing the fuse, but it is SCARY !!!! I did it once and it was bad news - the back end of the truck locks up and starts coming around with just a touch of the pedal.

BUT, I did a front and rear brake job and it drastically reduced the problem we are describing. Things are much better now

Recently got into an accident ($7500..ouch). I found out that on a 4x4 with rear ABS, if the front wheels lock and slip on ice, the rear wheels will be blocked by the transfer case whether you have ABS or not.

I also had air in my braking system. A Dodge mechanic told me that they have found numerous cases of air infiltration through the ABS module. They just bleeded the system for now but if your pedal is spongy and you need to bleed the system more than once, check that out. I know I will.

Lesson learned: Just keep pumping the pedal on slippery surfaces like the old times and don't trust the ABS

I am looking at 2004 dakota with 15,000km's. When I was test driving the truck I noticed the pedal pulsating a little.I applied the brakes very hard and had no problem with braking quickly after. However I noticed a low roar coming from the front brakes. Is this the start of the abs problem?

I have a '00 Quad Cab w/ 4x4 and rear wheel ABS. 64k on the
clock. Bought it used about three weeks ago.

I've almost rear ended two people in two separate incidents in a
24 hr. period. I had to make a last ditch avoidance effort and
turn up onto a curb for one of them, and turn down a freeway
offramp for the other. The brakes lock immediately when
applied firmly, causing the ABS to extend the distance of the
stop, and reducing power to what feels like less than half of full
power-- not desirable when you need to get the vehicle stopped
in a hurry.

Like one of the earlier posts, I've toy'd with the idea of
disconnecting the ABS, certainly I could do a better job of
modulating lockup than that crap ABS system that Dodge has
installed.

Any ideas as to a fix? I'm afraid to let my wife drive it! Hell, it's
even got ME spooked, and I've spent a fair bit of time husting
cars around racetracks!

Any advice would be appreciated, great site!

I have a 2002 QC with rear ABS only. Four wheel ABS uses a high pressure pump to cycle the pressure on and off. It only uses information coming from the wheel sensors. Very good and very quick. The rear ABS on the dodge uses a dump solenoid that dumps the pressure to the rear brakes on and off. Very slow and the worst thing is that when it dumps it feels as if it drops the pressure to the front brakes as well. So what happens is that it feels as if the vechicle slows then rolls forward then slows etc as the dump solenoid cycles on and off. A really cheap type of ABS. I think that the dump solenoid needs to cycle much quicker. It cycles based on the information it is getting from the diff sensor and the sensors in the transmission. When the computer sees the diff sensor stopped it dumps the pressure untill the computer senses that the diff sensor and the transmission sensor speeds are what are required by the computer program.
The only problem with turning off the ABS is that trucks have a tendency to rotate around their front wheels because the rear end is so light. The rears will lock up because of the light load and then a locked wheel will actually speed up and try to swap ends with the front end. Before ABS we would drive our pickups with a few bags of concrete in the tray to try and give some more traction to the back end.

My ABS did the same thing, i decided not to fix the problem, but instead to simply just unplug the abs fuse, the abs light and brake light is on, but i can stop. If anyone knows why the abs does this speak up.

Yes , braking is a must for all dakota owners. My 2000 4x4 has had 2 sets of rotors turned and calipars replaced once, on warranty .The latter with just 18k miles.Today with 22k ,all four wheels were locked-up with abs pulsing at 25mph.A simple slow should be just that. Not a stop. Today there's 141 complaints regarding our up'r ball joints, and 223 for the potentially deadly break occurances. Whats up!? Let 'em hear us at the NHTSA.I love my truck, but am becoming afraid to drive it!

Update:

I called up Tire Rack and ordered a set of slotted Brembo rotors
and a set of Hawk HPS pads for the front wheels. It was a good
move. The pads have more bite, and even if the truck gets into
the ABS it still stops predictably. Much better than the stock
parts that were on there previously. Before the ABS system
would engage and heat the pads and rotors so much that the
pads would start off-gassing and extend stopping
distances. Ultimately, I think that the swept area and rotor size
is too small for this size of truck (I think that was
mentioned earlier in this thread). The slotted rotors really helped
with fade, and the pads will bite repeatedly. I can now send my
wife out in the truck without a knot in my stomach. $300 well
spent.
