I'm thinking of buying a new 02. My son says don't get 6 cy. because of vibration and some dakotas have oil consumation problem. Could this be true? I'll be a 1st time truck buyer.

Not sure about vibrations and oil consumption but I would highly recommend getting the 4.7 V8.It will get about the same gas milage as the V6 and have a lot better performance for everyday driving and better re-sale value...if you were to ever get rid of it(on another one..that is).

Got my 02 about 2 months ago and love it. Have had no problems with my six cylinder but I think the $1150 extra for the 4.7 V8 is well worth it. I sometimes wish I had the V8 but still I LOVE MY SIXER!!! Good luck with buying a new one!

I only paid $590 more for my v8. Not really but that is the listed price for the option group I had. (I had the supplier price for my truck)

i love it
and it has enuf power to pass on the freeway
and enuf to pull my trailer
i get less than perfect gas milage
but i would recomend the 4.7 L

P.S.

I've had mine for 2 years now, I love this truck. It is a 4.7L quad cab 4x4 with plenty of goods. I just put a magnaflow dual exhaust system on it and performs well. only a few problems with it:

had a few problems when I first got it but the dealer fixed it no questions asked. paint scratches, rotor vibration, one bad tire.

gas cap went bad, fixed free of charge.
ball joints replaced, now DC owes me money for charging it on my warranty (still waiting on my check)

great truck, better than most pickups in its class.

I just bought a 2002 Dakota Sport Quad Cab, with the V6.

Coming from an 87 F150 with a 5L-V8, I have to say the V6 does take a little getting used to, as the power is not there. I personally am ok with that as I use it as a daily driver and have noticed fewer trips to the pumps.

I find the V6 strong enough to move 4 people around town or 2 dirtbikes into the bush. I wouldn't tow a 30foot boat with it though.

Cheers,
Jon

i have a 5 speed 2wd std cab short bed but they are right the difference in gas mileage is not noticable its all in the size of the truck, ext cab, 4wd things like that. though i have noticed any truck with a 6 and an automatic is a slug, good luck with what you get.

All I can say is, my folks never bought me a vehicle.
I wouldn't care what engine it had if it's free.

My v6 is a champ. And since it's just a 318 minus 2 cylinders, it's sure to be indestructable, because the 318 sure is. I've seen a 318 run completely out of oil and shut off, then all we did was put oil in it and it cranked up and ran like a champ. Besides if you get a jetchip stage 2, the v6 flies
