I have a 2000 dakota and the check engine light came on at about 74000 miles. Its a computer memory prob. Does anyone know what that means. The truck runs great too!!

Hello,
I have a 2000 with 38,000 miles on it and my check engine light came on 1 week ago, I took it to autozone so they could test it with there computer tester thing, and it gave them a code and when they looked it up it says i have a vaccum leak. What the heck does that mean? Oh and i think my tirod end is going bad. Some winding noise in the front end, and a slight vibration in my steering wheele. Sorry if I don't spell some of these car words right, not real good when it comes to cars. If any one has any info on recalls for 2000 dakota sport V8 4X4 please let me know. Thank you, MANDY

Not sure exact code but the vacuum leak is almost positively your gas cap buy a new gas cap at your autoparts store It will run you under $10 after you replace the gas cap remove the possitive(Red) battery post for 10 seconds and put it back on the engine light should stay out

I replaced my cam position sensor('00 4.7 Dak) after getting a check engine light/0340 code(and having my truck fail to start intermittenly).
Now I am still getting the same error code and my truck won't start.
Any ideas on what to check next?

i would suggest you try reinstalling the old sensor and see if truck starts. Just because you purchased a new sensor doesn't mean it works. Had a crank sensor that was defective right out of box (parts store gave me hard time tried to say i was attempting to return the old sensor)

Hey get this I have a 2000 dodge dakota on 1/21/05 while I was driving on the freeway my ABS light and Brake light came on and the spedo stopped working. It just came on temp but now it is on all time and today the MIL light came on. Do you think this is related or do I have two seperate problems and is the ABS light the Rear Axle Speed Sensor? What is the cause of the other light and how do I get the codes to come up to find out what the problem is??? Any help

I experienced the same problem with the ABS and Brake light coming on and staying on it turned out to be the rear speed sensor. It was a little annoying because on my truck the front and rear speed sensors went out within 24 of each other.

I have a 5 speed '99 Dodge Dakota. The ABS, Emergency Brake, and Check Engine lights all came on. The speedometer is haywire. It also stalls while coming to a stop. AutoZone's handheld diagnostic says MAP sensor reading is low and speed sensor is malfunctioning. It is not the MAP sensor. I also discovered that application of emergency brake causes damage to a wireing conduit under the dash. This wiring is connected to diagnotic port, emergency brake, and variety of other components. Many will experience this problem if not investigated. I plan to replace the speed sensor if Autozone gives the the right part this time....any suggestions about the stalling...is it related to the speed sensor?

I saw the message on cycling through error codes using the trip/
odometer. I have tried this on my 97 dodge dakota. I get the 12
error code for the battery and then nothing else. I don't see the 55.
I know there was an oxygen sensor issue so I know there are more
codes. How can I get to the next code. I have tried waiting and I
have tried cylcing the ignition key and I have tried pressing several
buttons, no luck. Thanks.

For the 0340 Cam sensor code if you drive your car for two trips with 16(?) successful shifts, your service engine light will shut itself off. It could be more than 16, but I know for a fact it is two trips. (Let it shift a bunch, shut it off and drive it again)

I have this same problem. My check engine light came on tues nite my car was running fine until the next morning when it started dieing. got it to the service station and had it scanned. The P 601 code came up. Called my brother who use to work for chysler he found info saying that my computer was failing and needed to be replaced. He also found that there is a Fereral Emmissions Warrenty that covers this 8years or 80,000 miles.
He said it is in the owners manual under Emmissions. Hope this helps

go to your local Autozone, advance Auto or other parts store and ask them to read the codes for you(it should be free) then we'll know what turned on your CEL.
just coincidence, should have nothing to do with changing the battery out unless someone screwed something up.
