Subject: popping sound coming from the steering
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 Dakota SLT CC 4X4 with 63,000 miles. Recently started hearing a loud popping sound when braking or making a sharp turn to either left or right. Sounds like it's in the steering column but can "feel" it in the brake pedal. Also, the steering wheel no longer locks when the ignition is off. Dealer can't find the problem. Anyone have any suggestions? Would appreciated any advice.

Try tilting your steering wheel up and driving it like that for a couple of days.. Mine goes away when i do that. Also check your lower ball joints and intermediate steering shaft. It's the piece inbetween the steering wheel and the steering box.

Thanks TX. So, how long has your Dakota been doing this? Everything under the front end has been checked including the ball joints. Dealer said everything checked out okay. They also checked the gear box and the steering shaft. They even put a new steering shaft in because they thought that was the problem. That didn't fix the problem either. This is costing me way too much money and no one has been able to pinpoint the "problem" yet. Are you still having popping sounds with yours?

Here is the TSB on this problem. The dealers seem to be ignorant to it.

NUMBER: 19-009-00

GROUP: Steering

DATE: Dec. 15, 2000

SUBJECT:
Popping Sensation/Sound In Steering Column While Turning

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves repositioning the steering column on the steering column mounting brackets.

MODELS:
2001 (AN)Dakota
2001 (DN)Durango
2001 (R1)Dakota (International Markets)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A popping sensation/sound can be felt and/or heard in the steering column during sharp turns (parking lot maneuvers).

DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR PROCEDURES:
Start the engine. Rotate the steering wheel to the extreme right and then to the extreme left while monitoring for a popping sound or sensation. If a popping sound or sensation can be heard and/or felt in the steering column while turning, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Start the engine.

2. Rotate the steering wheel so that the steering wheel is in an upside down position then remove the ignition key to lock the steering wheel in this position.

3. Remove the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement.

4. Using a trim stick or another suitable wide-bladed tool, gently pry the upper edge of the steering column opening cover. Pry lust below the cluster bezel on each side of the steering column away from the instrument panel far enough to disengage the snap clip retainers from the receptacles in the instrument panel.

5. Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel.

6. Loosen the steering column attaching nuts.

7. Bounce the steering wheel lightly in a vertical motion to normalize the alignment.

8. Without influencing the new location of the steering column, tighten the rear driver side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

9. Next, tighten the front passenger side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

10. Then, tighten the front driver side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

11. Tighten the rear passenger side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

12. Position the steering column opening cover to the instrument panel.

13. Align the snap clip retainers on the steering column opening cover with the receptacles in the instrument panel.

14. Press firmly on the steering column opening cover over the snap clip locations until each of the snap clips is fully engaged in its receptacle.

15. Install and tighten the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

16. Start the engine then, rotate the steering wheel back to its normal position.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

I won the same exact model as you do andI just had my dodge in for this problem. The dealer replaced the ball joints, intermediate steering shaft( I think this is the right name), and do an alignment. She runs right as rain now with no more noise. It cost me 385 bucks, down from 750 due to my extended warranty.

Hey firefighter11, I have a '01 Quad cab with the same popping sound. Turns out to be the bushings on the steering rack. Dont now if 98 is same as an 01, but it is worth checking into. One way to tell is turn the wheel all the way to the left, look into fender well at the rack while someone taps the steering wheel to its stop position, if the bushings are bad, the rak moves out about two inches.

I just got a call from the dealership where I dropped the vehicle off yesterday for the same problem. I had actually printed out this thread to assist them in diagnosing the problem.

Sure enough it was the steering rack bushings and he said the whole steering rack was smacking back and forth.

Thank you Lee!

over sensitive steering

Hi Guys..I own a 1992 Dakota with the 5.2 V8, and auto trans. The steering on this truck is extremely over sensitive. At idle, you can give the wheel a slight turn, and it will continue a full turn by itself. This thing is kinda scary at Hwy speed. Thanks for your input.

Is this a fix for the 2004 model also. No one can seem to tell me what the problem is. I have taken it to several mechanics. They tell me everything looks good. So I am going to print all this info. and hope it helps. Thanks.
