Is it normal for this transmission to act like it's in low gear when you first start out? This dosen't seem to be temperature related (outdoors) more like the transmission needs time to build up pressure to shift. Anyway has anyone else had this happen to them?

I've had this happen, but I do not think that it is a problem. It's just a little louder than normal.

I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab with 4.7 L engine. I encounte the same problem with only 900 miles on the truck. When I first got the truck, the transmission shifted just fine, then about 700 miles I first noticed it. It seems to be getting worse. It only shifts bad when first started, and I also believe it acts like it is building up pressure. It stays in first gear for a couple of blocks then starts shifting normally. I am call the dealer in the morning to take it in. I know it didn't start out shifting this way so it appears to be a transmission problem.

This is a known problem with the 5-45RFE transmission. My truck has been in the shop for the past 3 weeks with this problem. THe problem is a "DRAIN BACK" problem where to much fluid is draining back to the trans oil pan from the torque converter. Dodge tech support doesn't know what exactly is going on here for they have replaced almost every part in my transmission trying to find it. I say Dodte tech support is doing it because Dodge is not allowing any dodge dealer to go solo on this transmission yet because it's so new. They have finally given up the search for the problem on my transmission and are installing a new one today. I'm going to force them to extend the waranty on my new transmission for a total of 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got my (leftover) 02 Dak. Same thing-- around
700 miles it was worse than 1st gear. Seemed like
the tranny wasn't engaged. I pulled out of my
drive (300 feet long) and pulled off to the side
of the road. Thought it had something to do with
full time 4WD because I had used it the night b4
just prior to putting it to bed for the night. so
I put back into 4 HI and back again. Didn't seem
to do anything but was remedied in 30 seconds
after that. I am going on a 600 mile trip this
weekend and will be pulling a load of wood and a
small trailer. Is that going to be a problem prior
to getting this prob

This is normal with the clutch fan, when the fluid is cold the fan is engaged thus the loud noise.

Well, if it is the "clutch fan", then it needs to
be replaced. I never had a clutch fan make that
much noise in my F100, Volvo, Windstar, '89 Dak,
'99 Cherokee...It's not just a noise- it's about
the real ability to MOVE the vehicle. the previous
posts re: drain back make sense. RE: cold fluid,
this problem is intermittent. IE: this morning was
colder than any other morning since this problem
started, and I didn't have the problem. Go

Guys there is absolutely nothing wrong with your clutch fan. They all make the loud noise when they are first cranked in the morning or after it has been setting for quite awhile. The older s10 blazers were notorious for this also.

OPINIONS ARE LIKE....WELL, YOU KNOW THE REST!!

yeah, get used to it. just wait until it gets colder and the trans (45rfe)won't shift into OD at highway speeds for a good 5-10 minutes after startup after sitting overnight. It eventually will shift into OD once it warms up, so don't everyone panic and think there truck is defective.

I don't know about '02 trannies, but my 93 2W automatic has crapped out 3 times, with regular maintainance, and no abuse. Chrysler won't help at all. I bought this vehicle new. It only has 83K mi. Chrysler can't build a decent tranny. Dump your Dakota before it leaves you stranded.

I just got a 2002 yet have not takken in for service yet because I have the same issue. It seems to be worse when cold in the morning and how I park it the day earlier. It seems to be consistant if I pull against the perpendicular to the curb, hit the brake, put it into Netural and roll back a little, then park. Then the next morning for sure it slip the first few hundred feet.

Sounds like maybe, just maybe, you auto guys do have a problem. Get rid of the belt clutch/fan, and see if it goes away! Hey, why didn't I think of that!

On the 4.7, you have an electric fan anyway. It comes on at a certain temp, or, WHENEVER the a/c is on, even if the clutch to the compressor isn't on.

I haven't had my belt clutch/fan on my engine in over a year and a half. I have a 2001 model. I also have the 5spd-manual that is.

To remove the fan, get a large crescent, or pipe wrench, put it on the ONE bolt the holds the assembly to the pulley(the pulley is pressed on, it won't come of, even if the clutch and fan isn't there), and turn it the normal way for any standard bolt/nut. I put a small board on the wrench, and whacked it once good with a hammer, came right off. Do a search on this subject at this site, lots of variations, but take the whole clutch and fan off-more HP too.

NOw that the fan is off(YOU DON'T NEED IT ANYWAY-ALL YEAR LONG), see if you have the same symptoms.

If not, problem fixed, if yes, then it's probably the tranny.

It'd be funny if that shop above is doing all this, and it WAS the clutch fan!!!

I'm a PA, in the medical profession.

It's like diagnosing and treating.

You have a symptom. There's and EASY, FREE diagnostic treatment. If removing the belt clutch/fan works, promlem solved. If not, should have taken it of anyway. Nearly all the regulars on these boards, and I have it off on our 4.7's.

If there's no change without it, probably a tranny problem, if you have an automatic!

My 02 Dakota also makes the whirring noise when cold. Clearly, this is the fan! It goes away in under 1 minute. BUT.....it also seems to stay in first gear a loooong time...hence, making the whirring fan noise faster, and louder.

Torque converter drainback......ya, most likely.
