Subject: Auto Tranny Question
IP: Logged

Message:
sometimes when I first start out for the day, my tranny ( Muti speed auto) acts like it's locked in low gear then resumes normal operation after a block or two. Has anyone else experienced this? What can be done or has been done to correct this problem?

Thanks for your help!

Joe-My Dakota does the same thing. I've heard they are slow to warm up the transmission fluid.

just curiouse, how many miles and have you ever changed the fluid? my 96 dak 4x4 has 85k on it and when i got it ,it had around 47k. shifted a little stupid at times and i serviced it and has been fine ever since.... worked for me. just make sure you use +3 or better CHRYSLER compatible fluid. dextron 3/mercon will make it chatter. Got that from a chrysler engineer when i worked as a Jeep tech at a dealer in ohio. Hope this helps

I bought my 1999 Dodge Dakota one year ago and it had just started having this problem with the transmission. It will not shift out of first gear for the first block or so, and then it will kick into second. Then, it will be fine for the rest of the trip. If I stop the truck and turn off the engine for any period of time, it will do the same thing the next time I try to drive somewhere. Is this just a matter of changing to transmission fluid?

Also, I recently upgraded to larger tires. When I did this, I noticed a problem when the transmission goes into overdrive. The tranny seems to slip or hiccup or something when I'm in overdrive and start going up a hill or incline. Any ideas?

My 99 Dakota was having the same problem. Took it to the dealer & it was the output speed sensor on the rear of the transmission. The part cost about 40 to $50.00 if you want to do it yourself.
