Hi DOER. I also have a 2002 3.9 and I don't have a knock between 1200 and 1400 RPMs but I do notice that there is a difference when the truck is cold. On a real cold day, the engine sounds a bit harsher when shifting from 1st to 2nd. The RPMs remain the same but it sounds so loud (live it's revving higher) on the 1 to 2 shift. However, after about 5 to 10 minutes or so when it warms up, things are status quo. Any thoughts on this?

Daniel, from what you describe I'd guess it's the fan clutch, but I've never had one make the noise for that long. Usually a minute or two.

Thanks JustRed. Now that I think of it, you're right, it is for only a couple of minutes. It usually lasts about 2-3 stops on my street but only from a cold start. If I start it up and let it run in the driveway for about 5 minutes then there isn't a problem. Is this a normal thing for Dakotas?

Yes, very normal, and not just for Dakotas. My old S-15 Jimmy did that every morning for the 13 years that I owned it.

This is one case where "they all do that" is true. LOL.

I just purchased a new 2002 Dodge Dakota Ext. Cab 4 wheel drive. I have 500 KM on it. The wind noise in the cab at about 50 miles per hour is unbelievable. It sounds like you are constantly driving in a wind storm. Because it is new I don't want them to start putting shims or anything else in the doors. Has anyone else had this problem?
