Hi, I am also having the same problem with my 2000 RAM 1500 5.9 Quadcab. My husband told me it was because the truck sat a long time and it just had to be reset. Today I was driving and the check engine light came on. I upplugged the negative cable for 15 minutes and the check engine light no longer came on but the abs/brake light were still there. I was wondering if so many of us are having the same problem why isn't the company doing anything about it. I read all the posts and will try some of the things. Hopefully it will fix the problem.

Hi Guys

Thanks first of all for all the pointers relationg to the ABS and BRAKE light staying on. My occurance happened when I was leaving a work site and was spinning the rear wheels in mud. From what I have researched here and over the web this is a problem with dodge and the fix appears to be replacing the rear speed sensor on top of the rear axle. The funny thing after a few attempts at other fixes I discovered I dont even have ABS on the truck and a few of the local mechanics around here have said that this problem is the case with dodges. So far I havent repaired mine but after an hour on the web looking for the part it looks like I will have to go to the dealer. If anyone finds an online source it may be a good idea to post a link. Im also after a positve battery lead set for my Jeep and the dealer is trying to scam me for $157.... anyone know a source for this part?

If I remember correctly, to get rid of the ABS and Brake light problem on my Dad's old 89 Ram, we had to pull the glove compartment out (just delicately bend the plastic box) and unplug whatever the plug was behind it. It was small, not like a plug to a computer. We'd unplug it, wait a few seconds, and then replug it. The lights would come back on in a month or so.

I was young then, so I really don't remember what the plug went to. Hope it helps!

I was wondering if anyone with the ABS and Brake light on were using a Superchips or something similar? I had this happen to me shortly after I re-programmed mine with the superchips using the "high performance" setting. I have changed it to the "towing" setting and the lights have not come back on since. I will have to change it back again and see what happens. I thought some might find this helpful.

Does Dodge really care? Only if there hurt in the pocket book. Any way I have the same ABS/BRAKE light problem with my 2wd 1999 Durango. I also was told the speed sensor was the 400.00 problem. My list of problems continues. My rear blower motor doesnt work ,just to remove the head liner would be about 400.00 dollars, not including the blower motor. The volume control on the steering wheel is changing radio stations insted of volume, probly a short. Any suggestions ????????????

Ok guys I finally replaced the rear wheel sensor which maybe a fix for some (my truck doesnt have ABS remember). In my case this did not repair the fault. So I decided that I would trace the wiring from the sensor to see where it came from. On following it forward on the drivers side chassis it ends up in the engine bay. Now this is where my problem lay. If all dodges are like mine and as the wiring loom passes along the chassis it also passes up to the engine bay via the front wheel arch (that is if the wiring harness retainers are broken) and it was hanging in the wheel well. Well I have slightly oversized tires on the truck which often rub the inner well on tight turns. Guess what else it was rubbing? The wiring harness. Guess which one and only wire was broken? The one going to the speed sensor. On repairing the wire viola no more ABS or Brake light.

So a lot of you may want to try and trace the wiring harness from the rear of your vehicle to where it passes up to the engine bay (drivers side) and see if you have the same problem, especially if you have oversized tires on the truck.

Those with speedo problems may want to do the same, as this may also be your problem with the speedo not working till you hit a certain speed. It may all be related to getting no signal from the rear speed sensor.

I ohmed the sensor both new and old but cant recall the reading, if any of you guys want to know the readings for a good sensor I can recheck and let you know.

I hope to have aided at least some of you guys on this problem as I know its bugging a lot of you.

Jock

I had the same problem in my '98 Dakota 5 speed. My ABS and BRAKE light were coming on after I drove for awhile. It seemed to come on when driving over the smallest bumbs which completely threw me off. The ABS would activate under normal braking conditions too. When I came to a stop light or a sign, the pedal would drop and I would feel the pulsation. I thought I was going crazy at first because I had no idea what could be wrong. Then my speedometer started messing up at highway speeds. It would just bob around all the way from 20mph to 85. Thanks to this web site, I diagnosed the problem, bought a rear speed sensor for $34.00 from my local dealership and installed it myself in 15 minutes. I saved a ton of troubles and money! Thanks again for everyone who puts info on this site.

A very happy,
JC

I have a 98 dak. My ABS & brake light came on when I turned around 100,000. Shortly after that my check engine light came on and my speedo don't read until I get to about 20 mph. it works fine after that. I had it checked out and was told that my speed sensor was malfunctioning, it also said that the O2 sensor had the improper amount of air flow. I know why the engine light is on it is because I gutted the converter. It hasn't hurt anything, actully it helped the motor. It runs so much better. If anyone does this make sure you have a good aftermarket exhaust or it will only make things worse. I have trouble with the brakes in reverse, I had to put the truck in a ditch because it wouldn't stop. It didn't hurt anything though. I havn't had any problems in drive though. Does anyone have problems wit hthe motor stalling out when it is put in gear, automatics only, mine will. please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. mine is a 98 V6

Gutting your converter helps performance as when it is functioning it eats about 15% of engine power. It also wont do any harm other than you wont pass emmissions if you have one in your state. Cant help you with the engine stall as mine is stick. As for the O2 sensor cant help there either. But the speedo...... read the following .....its and earlier posting of mine.

Jock I have the factory wheels but I put bigger rubber around them. I don.t have any wheel rub at this point, but I plan on having 20's put on by the summer. I'm going to have them 1 to 2 inches wider than what is on now. I will try to trace the wires. Can you tell me where they are located on the rear end. Is your dakota a '97? What motor size? I will really appreicate any help you can give me. I usally do all the work that needs to be done.

I have a '95 sport 2.5L 4 banger on a stick.
You can find the wiring loom easily by first locating on the rear axle the speed sensor, its center on the top and should have a plug in connection with two wires, follow this to the edge of the chassis then follow it forward checking it as you go.

Foot note to the rest of us here about the speed sensor. Athough I have replaced mine and repaired the dammaged wiring, I still get the ABS & brake light comming on now and then. Turning off the ignition and restarting the truck seems to cure this problem. When I have time I am going to check out my repair and the wiring again as it maybe that there is to much resistance in the repair I did, hence causing the lights to come on now and then.

Hey everyone!!

Just wanted to say thanks and what a great site you have goin here. Found this the other night after doin some research on carpoint as to what the typical problems on the daktoas were then typed it in yahoo and what'dya know I find this site and the exact syptoms of my probs to the letter!! Typical symptoms...ABS and Bake lights were on, nothing registering on the speedometer below 20 mph, I could walk it down under do but it was really thready then would usually hit 0. Went to dodge, got the $42 part and 1/2 hr later it was fixed!!

Oh yeah...1999, 3.9L V6, 4x2, CC, SLT
For those of you that don't want to fork out $800 for 255/65 R 15 tire package for the few years dodge had it's head somewhere else see my other post!!

It's the ABS speed sensor located on the top of the rear differential. Don't get this confused with the Output speed sensor located in the side of the transmission. I haven't seen any local parts store that carries the ABS sensor, but several carry the one that goes in the transmission. The transmissions will look like the one found at:
www.partsamerica.com part number 7799702
and is a cream color. With my experience when this one goes bad you transmission will not shift correctly and the check engine light will come on. If it's the problem with the speedometer not reading until about 35, or ABS light, and brake light not going off or all the above I would put my money on the ABS speed sensor. Seems like the dealership has a monopoly on these items. I not saying that this is defiantly your problem, but it’s cheaper to try this first before replacing the complete ABS system.

Just my 2 cents.
