4WD Problem?

My '01 Dakota Sport won't switch back to 2WD from 4WD. The indicator light for 2WD flashes while the 4WD stays lit. Has anybody ever run into this problem before? I would appreciate any info that you can provide.

I have a problem with my 4high. When I shift it to 4high I hear a grinding noise after I get a few yards down the road, like it wants to shift out of four wheel drive. It works perfectly fine in 4low. Sometimes I shift it to 4low first and run it a while and then shift back down to 4high and that sometimes works; it'll stay in 4high. But it seems now the problem is getting worse. I can't seem to keep it into 4high. Any suggestions??

I own a 2001 4x4 dodge dakota quad cab, my question is on my 4x4 system. I Live in Las Vegas New Mexico and recently we had a bad snow storm . we received 29 inches of snow. I went to put my truck into 4 wheel drive when I started to reverse the gears to make sure it engaged into 4 wheel there was a popping noise coming from under the front end of the truck. When I went into first gear the popping continued. I put the truck back into 2 wheel only after reversing backwards to ensure that the 2 wheel system did in fact engage. I dont hear the [popping noise in 2 wheel drive but in 4 wheel and 2 low it is a loud popping. I would appreciate any help that you can give me.

1 or both of your cv shafts have broken. It is an easy hour fix but you may have some kind of warentee. Only bad thing is the cv shafts are over 150$ a piece. Good way to check them is turn your tire all the way, get out and grab the cv shaft < the shaft from your tire to the front diff> and start to shake it if it moves at all its broken. Good luck with the truck, dont let anyone tell you its a hard job tho i did both of mine in a little over an hour with hand tools.

My '02 switches from 2H to 4H in a blink, I have to stop for 4L & it still takes 30Sec-1 Min to engage, Sometime putting it in reverse slowly for a couple feet and then pullin back forward helps. Couple months ago I thought It was going to stay in 4L, I was in some heavy soupy mud playing hard for about 30 mins, when I got back to the hard packed trail it took about 2 mins and several forward & back moves to get it to disengage. The tires slung soo much mud over the truck I had 6" of soupy mud IN THE BED! I backed off the side of the road and dropped the TailGate and it oozed out for 15 mins! I figured it was just the large mudpack I built underneath. That was the only time it ever got stuck. (the shift, truck never got stuck! but it did have to pull my buddies FX4 out twice :D)

Actually bud, all new trucks have indipendent front differantials. Aka cv shafts. Glad i could help ya out man. It was an easy fix wasent it???? Just a costly one. If you would have taken it to a shop it would have costed ya 1000 or so.. What i did because both shafts are actually the same. I replaced one waited a month and did the other LoL. Not the kind thing to do but ehh. Gotta get your money outta the damn thing right!!
