Subject: Gas Mileage - II
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a used 00 Dakota Quad Cab w/ the 4.7
auto w/ 29K miles on it. I have only run a couple
of tanks of gas through it, but so far getting
around 15MPG. Another thread was on this subject
but hadn't been posted to in a while so I thought
I would start a new one. Someone said there was a
TSB for a computer upgrade. Does anyone know what
TSB # or the computer s/w or h/w release # is?
And how do I find out which version of the
computer s/w or h/w I have?

TIA,

Jeff

Look on the computer inside the engine bay on the passenger side. There will be a barcoded sticker that says something about an approved software update if you have the new code. 15MPG was the average I was getting with my 2wd QC with the same engine.

Got the same engine/tranny combo and getting 16.5 in mixed, mostly country road driving.
TSB 975 was done for the 4x4 tranny and I gained about .5 miles/gallon over the next 2 tankfuls. Truck currently has about 4200 miles on her.

I own a 2000 QC 4x4 with the 5.9 l and you probably won't believe this but I get 18.5 to 19.0 mpg averaging 70 on the hwy. What may have helped is the flowmaster, an Airaid cold air intake and a throttle body spacer, I also put a tonneau cover over the bed for less wind resistance. Anyway it all seemed to work I average 16.5 around town.

4.7 auto, getting 16-19, probably 17 average. Around 11,000 miles. Computer reads high consistently by 3 mpg, but the 17 average is actual.

Sprocket,
I would love to know how you get an average of 16.5 mpg with your 5.9. What gear ratio do you have? I have a 2000 QC 4x4, w/ 5.9L and 3.92 gears. I get 11-12 around town, and never any better than 16.5 on the highway. I have air intake, 180 stat, headers, larger y-pipe, cat-back, cap, rotor, wires, indexed plugs, and use synthetic oil. Is your truck loaded? I was wondering if the weight difference was that big of a mpg difference. Mine has every 2000 options: items like hitch, power windows, locks, mirrors, seat, big battery, alternator, larger radiator, etc.

I have the 5.9L with the 3.92 gears on a CC and I have been getting 13-15 MPG. A full tank on the highway I can get over 20. Mine has all the options with a K&N Air Filter and Flowmaster cat-back. Maybe your 4x4 option is what is killing your gas mileage.

Troy,
The only power my truck has is under the hood no power windows or anything except A/C. I'm starting to think it's a freak because of the mileage I'm getting. I have no idea what it weighs
or what the gear ratio is. I'm just lucky I guess. Maybe it's in the tonneau cover ???

Good think gas is kinda cheap right now huh?

i ve got a 2000 4x4 with the V6, the only thing i did to it was add a fiberglass cover on the bed, and it got me 5 MPG,

Im from baltimore ,and i drove to texas and was living there for about 5 months, while i was there i got the cover put on , on the drive down the bed was empty with nothing in it but a duffle bag ,on the way back it was loaded with about 700lbs of stuff and i drove on average 10mph faster also, and i still averaged 5mpg more on the way back.

if you are looking for gas mileage that is going to be your number one upgrade on the highway

Ya... After I figured out the gas peddle wasn't an "on and off" switch. I tried to add up the mpg and realize that its a truck.... not a beetle!

98 Reg Cab 2wd, 5.2, ram hood, free flow cat, glasspacks, jet stage1 chip, 3.92 gears, fiberglass cover
17 MPG highway 13 town

P.S. my 65 bug gets 39mpg
40 hp, 8 gallon tank can run farther than my truck
but guess which one I drive more!!

I own a 02 CC Dak 4x4 4.7 5-speed it since the day I bought it new, I got 18 mpg Highway and as high as 21 city. Honest to god, but thats when i drove it through town like a grandmother. In the first 3 weeks that I've owned it I had 3,000 miles on it. Took a trip to South Carolina week after I bought it. I love this truck (room inside cab, power, and the size of ballz it has under the hood!) Rides 10 times nicer than a GMC Jimmy, I hate that thing!

I wasn't speeding officer I was Qualifiying!

I own a 01 Dakota Sport C/C 4X2 with a 3.9lt engine & auto overdrive and I only get 18 mpg. on the highway. I also own a 1981 GMC 1/2 ton with a 350 4bbl carb that gets over 21 mpg. Can anyone tell me why a new truck does worse then a 23 year old truck does? Is their anything I can do to increase my mileage?

Finally. Somebody else that can't believe the MPG these things get. I get 17 MAX. That's cruise control all the way to work and back. I put a tonneau cover on this week so I hope I get an improvement. Next will be a K&N air filter.
How about this for contrast. I have a 77 Corvette since it was new. Put over $3000 in parts to the engine. I made a "Breather" out of it. Lots of HP and get the same mileage as the DAK. Here's what I can't figure. At 70 MPH the Vette is running about 3500 RPM. The DAK is 2200 RPM. Bigger engine, more RPM And huge carburetor vs Fuel injection

I have a 97 dak 5.2L 4x4 ext cab. I put a new mopar r/t cam, jet stage II chip, airaid cold air intake, power-aid throttle spacer, boared out cylinders, new crank shaft and pistons, high vol oil pump, roller lifters, dual cat-back with a 15" glass pack, and have to run prem gas now and i get 8 in town and 11.5 on highway. im thinking of lifting it with 33x12.5 to help kill the gas mileage more. but I love my truck and wouldnt trade for a new ford if you paid me.

I would like to know why my '98 Dak Ext Cab is getting 13.6 MPG. Its a v6 and i checked the plugs, the fuel filter, new performance air filter, i never run the ac/ or the heat. So am i stupid, what am i missing here. Cause i'd like to know how to get it back to where it was over 2 years ago. When it was doing an average of 18-20.

That's not good mileage for a V6. If you are near 60k replace the O2 sensors, next check plenum and cat for restrictions. I get about 16 back & forth to work and 22 on the highway. And I don't baby it. Did you drop the fuel tank to check the fuel filter?
