Hey guys, got the same problem with the stumbling under 500 rpms. I had 2 recalls on my 2000 Dak for computer related problems and it started some time after that. Took it back to 3 diffrent dealers and got the same answer "can't find anything wrong" Also the "bump" in the back is from the gas tank. I get it at 3/4 full and lasts until 1/2 tank. Kind of gland I leased the truck but I really hate to get rid of it. Buy the way, How about those rotors the put on this truck?

I have a 2001 Durango with the same problem, mostly when we hit the off ramp from the freeway. My wife has been told twice that if the service light is not on, then there is no problem. I will be taking it in a couple of days with a few of these posts and an attitude. We also have another problem, maybe its related. We get a big puff of blue smoke from the exhaust after it has sat all night. Love the truck-Hate the service!

DONT FEEL TO BAD FOLKS-

Dam! I thought I was just being to picky about the way my NEW 2002 Dakota 4.7 idled. Just bought it in May, 02 and have 3k miles on it, and its dropping to 4-500 rpms, usually when I'm pulling into a parking space with the ac on; but at varied times also. She hasn't stalled on me yet... OOOOOOOHH that would really make me mad`~~ I was worried in the hot weather the low idle speed would run it too hot, but with the extra electric fan, I guess there should be little room for that problem? Anyway, didnt see to many posts from 2002 owners, just wanted to let you know,..it's STILL happening!
Oh yeah, I feel that little "bump" everynow and then too..

Had 4.7 00 club cab and got fed up w/ruff idle and stumble, even stalled seveal times. dealership could not duplicate prob. ditched it @15k and got a 02 graphite q-cab..having same prob except it hasn't stalled yet...came close a few times but I stepped on the gas. Seems to me if the engine has all the goodies like roller rockers and lifters it should run and perform smoother than it does. I have 7500 miles so far gas mileage sucks....I drive 15 miles one way to work speeds are between 50-65 best mileage so far is 13.9

Hey, I have a 2002 Dakota 4.7, bought new 12/01. Rough idle problem since new, has even died when cold after shifting from reverse to drive, really hot day. Dealer says this is a problem with the programing in the idle speed and timing. Older model 4.7's in the Jeeps have a solution approved from Chrysler to get the programming changed but have not been approved for the Dakotas yet, why I don't know. Am having to keep in touch w/ dealer to get updates. This change has to be approved by the EPA since it makes a difference in the emissions system so this I'm sure is slowing down the process.

Same problem with my 00 4.7 QC. Especially after getting off the freeway. Have had it back to the dealer 3 times. They cleaned the TB & FI and changed the plugs the first time. Changed an idle motor the second. The last time they recorded some information while they drove it then downloaded to DC. Still happens and no ideas from either DC or the dealer. The problem started AFTER they reprogrammed the PCM a year ago. Anyone have any ideas?

I just got a 2002 Dakota in July. Quad Cab SLT Plus with the 4.7 also. Yes, it has this idle stumble. I was not happy when I felt this. I had a service guy take it for a ride, and he said Dodge still has no software fix yet. I've been putting in 87 octane since I bought it. I will try 93 for a tank and see if any change. I will post results after I run it for awhile. These new engines should purr like a kitten....

Don't 'cha love it when they can't duplicate the prob.......and when ya pick the vehicle up it happens leaving the lot!!!!!!
I believe the thump comes from the fuel sloshing in the tank... I have an 02 QC...... My prob is what I call a rough idle along with stopping at a sign or light dropping to about 500 rpm on the gauge and then gives a little shimmy shake/shudder but has not stalled yet...No answers yet but leaning toward dumping for something other than a dodge.

2k2 SXT V6. My stumbles at 2300 RPM. Dealer says they couldn't find it. I drove with the head mechanic and didn't get out of the parking lot when it did it. His response was they all do that. Salesman didn't mention it. They won't fix it either. It's a Piece of Crap.
Besides, this engine dates back 30 years when they cut off two cylinders from the 50 year old 318 V8. Nothing new except the name and injection. The only reason for the injection was for emissions.

Well Guys I guess I am the proud owner of one 4.7 peice of junk. If I had know this problem existed I never would have bought the truck. Its a 2002 Dakota 4.7 manual trans. I must say I am at my wits end with this problem. My truck has stalled twice and the idle is very inconsistant. Anywhere from 400 to 1100. The best part is that I had a copilot put on it and even that malfunctioned. You would think that a problem that is 3 years old they would have fixed by now. How many you with the 4.7 have manual 5 speeds. I am so mad but it doesn't seem to help to take it in because there is always no problem and Chysler will tell you that this is normal. So how many times do we have to take it in to get a new one under the lemmon law. Ha Ha This suck and I am very very mad.

Sollution,Fellas how are you. I have a 00 4.7 Manual Transmission. Had it since 6500 miles have 48k now. Did the exact same thing with the idle problem, Stalls almost dying, dies from reverse to forward all that stuff. I took it to 3 dealers in my city and no one could fix it. I heard the Jet Stage II chip will fix it but havent done it. If you notice if you turn on the a/c or just the heater the RPMs bump up to like 700RPM from like 500. So since about 12500 miles i jsut keep the a/c - heater on all the time on low just keep it on the defrost setting and the temp wherever i want it. If its not hot or cold just turn the dial to the middle. I jsut keep it on all the time. Havent had any more rough idles or stalls.
So just keep it on all the time andyou wont have to worry about the idle ever again.

I have all the same problems. Dealership mechanics suck!!! Took truck in for rough idle, picked it up after shop closed, truck barely started. Took it back next morning, replaced injector, truck started fine but rough idle still there. No trouble found with low idle, told service manager truck idles around 500 rpm and it should be higher, he said that you cant tell from looking at the tach. No "service soon" light on = no problems.

MY FIRST AND LAST DODGE I EVER BUY!!!! DONT KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING WHEN I STRAYED AWAY FROM MY LONG LASTING CHEVY S-10!!!!!!!!!

anyone tried replacing the battery? This sounds stupid, but this is why I ask. When my truck was new (97 dak v6 w/205k on orig engine)it began to stumble like that. IN fact, it got so bad, it would ocassionally quit on me. The dealer told me that it could be the voltage reg. but that was in the computer and would be costly. A nice service tech told me to change the battery. He bet me a case of beer that the problem would be solved as the trucks come with a big battery, but not made to last---beyond the test drive...lol

I changed the battery, no stall, no stumble----only cost me a case of miller, and a battery. Apparently, the slightest voltage fluctuation translates to an idle fluctuation with the fuel injection system.

my two cents...

Just wanted to post some more bad news and let everyone know that I have a 2002 4.7 with 3000 miles on it and it has the same idle problems. You would think after a few years Chrysler would fix this problem. I also have had to change the ignition switch already. That's too bad because I really like the Dakotas and probably will get rid of it soon.

Jeremy, and others,

I have an 01, 4.7, 5spd manual, is this is the first I've heard of a rough idle with a manual!

Mine does, and has idle smooth as silk, around 6oorpm, and always does, whether cold, hot, things on, etc.

I thought it was only a prob with the auto tranny!

it will not help to adjust the t.b. your truck is pcm controlled. base idle adjustment will do nothing for your problem. the computor will still try to get the idle to it programmed point. and if you mess with it you are likely to get your configuration out of wack. i know that it seems that it is already, but believe me i've done this to a chevy s-10 of mine and it really made problems for me. I did sell that s-10. there is a web site that tells you how to adjust your tps. here it is if you like

Well its been a week since I put in the Jet stage 1 performance chip. And the news on this is that I have not had one bit of stumbling at idle. NONE>. My gas milage went up (by 2-3mpg------which means i get 16.5mpg now on average------,,,my driving consists of 80miles all highway a day round trip to work, not including some "city" driving. The performance side of it is that I feel some increase in hp when I'm passing,(or kicking some kids "rice" cars but)so for me I am very happy.

I won it on ebay for $128.00, jet wants $250 +.

for those of you interested the part # is 90002 which covers '98-'01 jeep, and'98-'02 dodge dakota 4.7.
