I think the problem is the shafts and coupling between the column and rack, not the column itself........Dave2000qc

I brought my 01 dakota in for "steering column knock". I'd never seen this stream, but did a search after my fiasco.

Dealership said it was the sway bar bushings. They were shot and replacing them would solve the knock. Well, it tightened up the front end (which was nice). But even driving out of the dealership lot, the knocking was still there as bad, or worse, than when i dropped it off.

They seem to have no clue. I'm pissed. Awesome truck otherwise, but a two year old truck shouldn't feel like a loose piece of crap when driving. I'm bringing this stream of posts tomorrow.....thanks, it's nice to see others have had the same exact thing I tried to describe to them.

It's the steering unit itself. Why doesn't anyone get it? I replaced the bushings to the sway bar with the poly type and nothing improved also. I'm telling you all it's the steering unit. They suck.

Wouldn't want any other!

The rack is very fragile. Personally, I hate R&P on a truck. I much prefer Saginaw RB. Dodge really cheaped out on this part.

There is a problem with the coupling but my problem still existed until I replaced the rack. Maybe that was just mine.

Wouldn't want any other!

well I have had my r&p (rack) replaced because of the noises & looseness (sp) ...had it aligned on three seperate occasions. and it still pulls to the left as I am driving. There is a poping noise every time I turn into Mcdonalds that seems to come from right behind the cab on the drivers side. And can you say BUMPSTEER?! my rotors have warped twice (turned once) my tranny slips, and my gas cap being loose causes the check engine light to come on. this is a '01 qc... with only 38,000 miles. seems like the more I fix the more it breaks. I guess I need to quit going to Mc D's. that would be an easy fix for one of my noises.!!!
did anyone else get a "recommended tranny service" at 18k from their dealer? or am I an idiot. I didn't see that in the manual~!!
If I wasn't upside down, I'd trade it in!

Does anyone know of a definitive fix for the clicking in the steering column? I just had my 02 CC in for the clicking and the dealer replaced the clock spring but it's no different.
As mentioned before, the clicking in the steering column gets louder when it's hot.

I had the clunking/popping in my 02 QC 4x4. Over the course of about a year, I had them replace the steering rack, do the clockspring fix, and a number of other things. The only thing that eventually fixed it (so far so good, anyway) is to replace the steering column coupler. That seems to have solved the problem, and it's been about 6 months or so.
