Subject: Sub box for under GEN II seats!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 96' Dakota Club Cab. I was wondering if there was a box that could be built similar to the one's that fit under the GEN III Dak's seats in the back. I don't want to take up any space in my truck for any speakers or amps so I thought that would be a good idea. The GEN III rear seats look similar to the one's in the GEN II. I didn't know if U could use the same technique as the GEN III boxes. If u have done it send me some pics. And how big of subs could u fit if there is a box? Thanx a ton!!!

Any decent custom stereo shop shoudl be able to build a box that will fit under your rear seat and hold two 10" subs and an amp. Might cost a little more, but it can work.

Yea that is something I want to do and the measurements look to be the same and so do the back seats. The only thing that looks dif is the cup holders. Hey did u cut the whole underneath of the seat out or leave the outside frame and just take out the tray's. It looks to me like u could fit 2-10's in the tra's if you took them out??? Get back wit me thanx. If u have a pic of the back of ur box when not installed it would be appreciated b/c then I could understand it better. Thanx!!

I cut the tool tray portion out and left the cup holders. I do not have any pics of the back of the box. The back looks the same as the front, just without the trim plate on. The subs in my Dak are 10's. 12's would work but the box will take up too much rear foot space.

I hope this helps!!!

Oh so u ripped the whole original box from the tool trays out and replaced it with the speaker boxes. Am I right? Did u leave the front like molding there or ripped it out? See I was think'n if I take the trays out i could just make a box that holds my two subs that slides right into the opening where the trays were but I am not sure I would like to see how other ppl did it before I get ripping and tearing out. Thanx!!

Here's a pic to show what I cut out. I didn't take the tool tray out, I cut the storage sections and the front out. Then I slid my box in place and then secured it.

Man that clears it up a ton. So u ripped it all out except the trays and just slid the box into there. I think that part might be dif. b/t the old and new daks. U can't really tell what a GEN III back seat looks like from that pic but there looks like there is a lil difference. I think in might be able to take the trays out and keep the box and put 10's in the boxes but I love the way ur box looks it is awesome but I'm not that crafty. Thanx!!!!!

Im in the process of making a box under the rear seat of
my 92 xcab. I've got a ton of pics but havent had a
chance to post any of them yet. Hopefully within the
next week. I can give you a brief rundown of the box
though. I started by removing the storage bin and
building a frame out of MDF in its place. I then laid
fiberglass to the contour of the floor to get all the
airspace possible. The top of the box is also made of
MDF. The box is two separate chambers and I'm using
two PPI 10s. The box is going to look pretty sweet when
its done. All I have left is a little sanding and some
carpet. As far as SQ goes....Im not sure. I've never made
a sub box out of fiberglass before. I can email you some
pics if you want...just let me know. Hope this helped...

Man pics would be hott!!! Thanx!! If I wanted though could I just tke out the trays, b/c they unscrew, and stabilize the subs in there??? I don't want to go ripping and tearing everything up but if I have to for my last resort I will. But wit that box do I have to remove the seats or can they stay mounted the way they are? B/c I really want them to stay the way they are f I can. Thanx!!!!

Ok so those are 10's? See my prob is I gt all my stuff from factory and I am not goin all out. I think the subs I am look'n to get have a 55 oz magnet. I don't want anything bigger. But the prob is it doesn't give the depth. So I was wondering will those subs fit in the box? How deep is the box? Thanx a lot and ur box is just whati was think'n.

BADDAK....there really isnt a way to tell if your speakers
will fit in the box i built or not. It depends on how deep
the speakers are and the diameter of the magnet. The
diameter of the magnet matters because there are
curved surfaces inside the box that might limit mounting
options. Also, you need to leave some room between
the bottom of the speaker and the box so it can vent. I
actually havent even measured the depth of my box. I
just built it so the speakers would fit properly. I'll
measure it tomorrow though when I take it out of the
truck to carpet it.

Hey my subs have a 55oz magnet. They are the Power Acoustik SPL's 10". I can't find the length. My dad has an electronic distributer that I get all my electronics through real cheap. I have seen they are like 8.25" and then I have seen 7" long. So I have no idea. What kind do u have and how long are they? How deep is the original box now if I took out the tray's? Thanx!!!

Do you mean the mounting depth? Just set the sub on a level surface and measure to the bottom of the mounting ring.

The subs I have are PPI 10's. The mounting depth is
only 4.875 in. 7 or 8 in. deep for a 10 in. sub is really
deep. If they really are that deep, there is no way they
will fit under the seat. Im not quite sure what you mean
when you ask about taking the trays out of the original
box. There are no removable trays in the storage bin
that came out of my truck. It is all one piece that unbolts
from the floor and pulls out.

Yea I looked at the box really close this time and I finally realized it is all one thing lol. I think by the time u take everything out there is about 6" there to play with??? I don't know bout my subs again. I can't find the dimensions anywhere. I saw that the port size was 7" long but I don't know if that is correct. I am going to order them tom. from the company and I will ask the guy how long they are. They are supposed to be a competition sub so I'm guessing they might be long. If so I could work that out. Hey 92Dak do have some dimensions of your box or anything?? That would be appreciated. But if not I have done some measuring and can figure it out I just wanted to compare them with ur's. Alrite well than you all!!!!!
