If you have a hard tonneau cover on your Dakota, and you put subs in the bed, will it sound good or will the bed wall and cab wall cover it too much?

Whenever people puts subs in the bed, they usually do a cut-through into the cab. If not, you will just hear a lot of rattling and not much bass.

Who does the cut. Will they do it where you get it installed at or do you have to take it to a body shop for that? Or is it easy to do yourself?

Scuba..
You can do it yourself.. save some money.. Or you can have a body shop do it.. they will just bring out the plasma cutter and in about 20 mins it will be done.. or you could have the stereo place do it as well.. wich it will probably cost alot more then the body shop and even doing it yourself. you will have to cut the wall if you are going to put the subs in the bed because if you dont.. you will not get any bass where you want it.. I did the cut thro myself.. it took me 2 days to complete the whole thing.. thats stripping my truck inside.. removing the tonnuea and cuttin.. cleannin the edges. puttin in the seal then puttin the box in.. subs then amps.. running wires and then puttin truck back together.. it only took me two days cause i took my time. i mean really took my time..
if you want to check it out.. you can its at

www.dodgetruckworld.com/joe_himself
it should be in the install or stereo folder..

JOE!!! I was looking to do a cut through to my truck as well, but I have flowmaster pipes and an ARE hard tanneau cover on my QC. Normally it's not all that loud in the cab, as far as rumble goes, but when I get between 50-55 mph it get's loud, then quiet again after 55... does having the hole in the cab make driving noise much louder? Or should I pull out my plastic bed liner and dynamat the whole thing and put the liner back in? How much does dynamat cost and how can I buy it (by the sheet, by the roll?) I have never used that stuff but I hear it works wonders.

Also, who designed the box for your two 12's? The square hole in the center, is that a port into the chamber of each speaker? I bet that thumps!

My QC is also red so your pic's really helped(girlfriend isn't going to like seeing me walking out to my truck with a sawzall in my hands and a crazed look on my face)

It looks as though you did your cut yourself, or wherever you had it done let you take pictures while they were doing it??? I assume you did it yourself... did it hurt to cut your truck? that's something you can't change so DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME right! WOW

Hey slanty..I have a loud exhaust on my truck as well.. once the box is in and sealed up against your bed you dont notice the noise.. probably going to be the same as what it is now.. no biggie. You dont have to dynomat the whole bed.. it would probably be just a waste.. and just to let ya know.. i did take out my bed liner.. just because my box was a little bit tooo big to fit with it in.. so i took er out.. once again no biggie.. i dont carry much in the back besides baseball and hockey equip.. The box design i did myself.. it was a little bit harder then i expected.. My box's inside dia had to be 5 cu ft
thats a BIG box...and yes it is a port.. the square port i decided to go with because i like the looks of it.. and it dont give you port noise like you would get with a round plastic port.. and besides you can make one huge port instead of 2 round ones like i would of had to have.. Soon the box is going to be painted red same color as the dash peices that are done.. im not to sure if im going to beable to get it to shine as good but i will try.. And trust me.. my gf did take a trip when she woke up and saw me cuttin my truck.. i thought she was gonna grab a gun. LOL but it was all worth it.. and yes it does pound.. a little bit too much if you ask me.. but thats the fun in it all.. It is a hard desicion to make.. wether to cut a hole in your truck that will be there forever.. unless your a dam good welder.. or to leave it and sacrifice your bass.. i decided i liked bass too much.. i am a bass junkie..
As far as do it right the first time.. yes you do wanna.. measure three times .. cut once.. what i actually did tho is measure a bunch of times then cut the hole smaller then it should have been.. that way i could always take more off.. Overall i would say its only a job if you have confidence in yourself.. and others doo as well.. i did have the odd person say to me.. ohh your gonna mess up.. but hey.. i took my time.. made sure i did it right.. and now i have a stereo comp winning truck.. The subs of choice for mine was a little over done.. but you can always turn the bass down. Also having the subs right there. not muffeled by seats or anything gives you alot better sounding music.. no matter what you listen to..
So if you decide to go with the cut thro.. make sure thats what you want.. and you arent going to change your mind 3 months down the road..

:)
