Anyone have an MTX 6500D amp? I've heard good stuff about them and bad and I'd just like to hear some more opinions.

I have had the amp for about 6 months now and I love it. The amp is so strong there is no sub that this thing can't pound. Plus it is small, has a lot of options, it's pretty inexpensive and stays cool.

I would recommend it to everyone. Plus don't let the 250 watt rating fool you, this thing can put out close to 1000 watts into 2 ohms.

I installed one for a buddy about a year ago on his two 10" JL Audio subs and it really pushed them hard, I was impressed. I have seen the specs on it in Crutchfield and it is not a very clean amp so I would not run it full range, but for subs, it is a great amp.
Just my 2 cents.

Seeing how it is a Class D amp you can't run it in full range. It only plays 0-200Hz (bass). Installation dudes should know things like that, wake up man.

2 more cents

The MTX amp I installed was the 6304 run bridged into two channels. If you look at the specs on the MTX Thunder amps, not one of them has better THD than 0.1% at rated power, not really suitable for full range output.
Keep your 2 cents R/Truck, you may need it if you attempt to insult another member.

I didn't insult you just corrected you.

If you would have done your homework you would see that the MTX amps are rated with less then 1% THD. That means the amp exceeds its power rating and keeps the THD below 1%. Just about all of MTX amps exceed the stated 110dB signal to noise ratio (the 6500D is 121dB S/N). Every MTX amp has a testing certificate in the box, mine shows distortion to be less then .04% which is excellent.

THD below 1% can not be heard by a human ear, so I don't know whay you wouldn't want an amp that can exceed its power rating with inaudible distortion and excellent signal to noise ratio.

That sounds like a good amp to me. Here are a few awards that MTX has achieved:

MTX amps are awesome and R/Truck is correct on everything he has stated. It is a Class D amp and I do not know why you would want to run it full range when it's range isn't even that large. Although, I do know of some Class D amps that do have a large range -- Arc Audio for one -- and can be used that way. If you could tell the difference in .1% I am REAL impressed. Also most specs on subwoofer amps are be misleading and things like dampening and S/N ratio mean nothing -- no two companies test the same.

R/Truck was not trying to be insulting and was just joining in on a topic. His post had no aggression, like many others I have seen on this forum. Ridiculous...

Thanks for help.

The whole topic was sub amps and we got off on THD and full range clarity and so forth.

I fill like the mono/D amps are the way to go for subs, they direct all of their power to bass and thats what really counts. Don't worry about THD and S/N ratio when looking at these amps, cause you won't hear it anyway. Just make sure the watts match up to the fuses. A 1000 watt amp isn't going to have a 30amp fuse.

For every 1 amp(based on the fuse ratings) you will get about 10 watts of power (approx.)

I'm only running an MTX 4250D, but I can assure you that it performs better than what its rated for!!! MTX amps are well under-rated. And yes, THD makes no difference in a class D amp. In fact, just the nature of how it works (I won't get into it cause no one really cares:) should actually cause a higher THD, but MTX keeps it somewhat lower with what they call Adaptive ClassD technology. STN ratio means absolutely nothing with a class D amp, cause low pass filters block noise and subs can't reproduce "noise" anyway. Alright, Alright...I'll shut up

I just got the mtx 6500d and it's AWESOME. I had four audiopipe 12's in a custom ported box pushed by a mtx 4250d and it shook my throat, but i just recently upgraded to 4 mtx 8000 12's with the 6500d and its unbelievable, and yes you can hook up 4 12 inch 4 ohm subs to the 6500d. I have each pair wired parallel and and both negatives to the left channel and both positives to the right channel with no problems at all. (yes i know its internally bridged so it doesnt matter but i like it like that) Any way im going to try to find a spl competition to get my spl rating and probably kill the competition. I also have a one farad power cap which helps tremendously. Im probably hitting around the 160db range by a guess. Very happy with the 6500d and hopefully by next summer i'll have 12 mtx 8000 12s and 2 6500d in my firebird. MTX does not disappoint!!!

yup I have one too! I have pushed 2 15" kicker compVRs and now I have a 10" kicler SoloBaric L7 (wired to 1 ohm) and it kicks! it's been wired like that for almost a year now, and NO problems at all!

Oh, and I killed a JBL GT 12 with it, and a "black magic" 12 as well!

I run mine at 1 OHM day in-day out... I have been for a little over a year now... it pushes the SoloBaric L7 around easily.. I have people ask me all the time if I have a 12 in my truck... Its in a pretty small sealed box, and sounds clear/defined. no complaints with the amp (or sub for that matter)
