Hey all.. i will let you in on a little problem that just started happening to me today. .
So here i am driving down the road and i go to make a turn having my stereo turned up as always.. i hit the brakes.. and pop.. there goes my radio fuse in my truck.. ok whatever no biggie.. so i replace the fuse on the spot.. start driving and hit the brakes to stop and pop.. there goes the fuse again.. so i go home with the fuse blown.. and look over the wiring.. and nothing seems to be wrong.. i even re-wire my deck so i made sure nothing was hooked up wrong.. then when i go to hook it up.. i have no accessory power when i turn the key.. i was like what the Fuk.. then i realized.. oh yea the fuse is blown.. so i replace it then try it again.. works fine but as soon as i hit the brakes the fuse pops.. so what i did was i cut the accessory wire from the harness.. and wire a new line from another accessory spot and run it to the deck with a 10a inline fuse.. so its working off of another accessory power line now.. anyways same thing happenes.. it blows the fuse in the line i ran from the accessory.. But it only happens when i hit the brakes.. now why is it popping fuses.. i didnt think or still do think that the brakes are hooked upto an accessory power.. or is it.. ??
Is there a possibility there is a problem with my brake wiring.. or what is it.. i dont get it.. its always either the radio fuse that pops.. or they way i have it hooked now.. with the inline fuse.. Any help would be appreciated if someone knows what im trying to say here.. I really need to get this fixed or im going to run my dak into a pole..

sound to me like you have a problem in your brakes. Do this take the fuse out for the brakes and see if the fuse for the radio opens "pops" if it does not then the problem is in the brake wireing if it does that you might be grounding out the power wire for the radio with the mecahnical parts of the brake pedal. Look at all the wires arround the brake pedal and all under the dash their as well as behind the fuse box its self thats all Ican think of.

I had a similar problem as well, but it was a little different. I installed my deck and everything. but the dash lights were not working. so i looked and the fuse was gone, no big deal. I changed the fuse and all seamed to be working fine. but then a friend of mine told me that my tail lights weren't working (but my brake lights were working) so i looked again and a different fuse was gone this time so I changed that fuse again. now whenever I turn my lights on and play the stereo at the same time the stereo will cut out for a second and the fuse for my tail lights will blow. So i took my deck cause i was gonan fix it later. after i checked the wireing twice I hooked the deck back up. but this time now instead of the fuse blowing everytime i turn the lights on the deck will turn off (not get power) while the lights are on. as soon as i turn the lights back off the deck comes back on. does anyone know what is the problem? or have any sugestions i could try. I have tried all i could think of.

try instead of using the normal power to hook your deck up.. run a diff power.. grab power from somewhere else in the fuse panel.. then run a wire with a fuse link in it to your deck for its power.. but make sure its an ignition power.. not constant.. could try this first.

check your wiring to make sure that your constant or ignition wires are not hooked up to your illumination wire

joe: do you have any kind of trailer break light adapter hooked up to your truck/car? does it blow the fuse if you have your lights on/off... or does it matter?

dave: power always travels the shortest distance, so if you have two things sharing power from somewhere, it's only going to go to the one with least resistance... or rather, you will get a little power to both, until one get a lot easier to go through, or one gets harder to go through. make sence? exe. if you are sharing power with your lights, the "distance" going through the lights will be easier than trying to push that big ol sterio

Check your fuse diagram from your owners manual and see which fuses draw power from both the radio and the brake lights. Check your owners manual on your radio and make sure that it doesn't overdraw more amps than your circuits are rated for. There might be a chance that your radio shares the same power, ground, or accessory fuse that your brake lights do, start there first. I hope you disconnected your battery when you were installing your radio because you might have damaged your factory wiring harness with a minor short or crossed lead. Now keep in mind that you can always put a bigger fuse for the one that is popping but you risk certain phantom problems that can pop up right away or later. Its not uncommon to upgrade a fuse but I'd exhaust all my other options before resorting to that. If you have a Fluke volt meter or know someone that has one, grab it and start measurign the current draw across your fuses and have someone help you.

Bryon - sounds like a wire got cut somewhere... but do NOT put a bigger fuse in!!! That will not solve the problem, in fact it will make things worst and possible start a fire. Pull the radio out and check the power wires for a cut or damaged wire or connector.

everything works in my dak but my pioneer head unit starts to blink when i turn the volume up past 50. a while back a fuse blew on me and i replaced the 15 amp fuse with a 25 (had no 15 amps), could this be why? the volume max is 62. the blinking is not bad or anything but its kinda aggrivating.

Dumbazz is right, lets cut up a $400 wire harness instead of usind a $10 stereo adapter. You can't buy just the stock connector for the harness, you have to buy the whole wire harness and it's not worth the expense or effort to replace the harness, to get the stock connector back. Looks like you need to take it to someone who knows what they are doing to straighten out the mess. If the harness connector is gone then someone who knows what they are doing, stereo shop or someone with car stereo experience, will need to hard wire the stereo to the cut harness.

Even if the stereo and amp is going directly to the battery, it shouldn't cut out and die. Probably crappy wiring connections, undersized wire or an all around bad install. All of the wire connections should have crimp connectors or better yet soldered connections with heat shrink tube or tape. I have seen too many people twist the wires together and call it good, WTF? This might work for a day or two but it's a disaster waiting to happen, and this might be what your experiencing.

Sorry about the problems and hope everything turns out OK.

Need help with wiring.

I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota, just got a hitch and installed it along with the wiring harness. I did not notice at first because it was a sunny day, but later discovered my tail lights and dash lights out. The fuse block cover gave no indication where the fuse for this combined circuit was. Does anyone have an idea if it is under the hood or under the dash and which one in the fuse block it could be??
