Yes you have to remove a lot of stuff. Just take your time and start plucking panels off.

It would help us to know what year you have.

it took me 10mins to take out my factory outta my 98,you just gotta take off the trim panel in front of the steering wheel, dont worry,by pulling wont break the snaps. It's about the third time i've did it.and after its off there will be 2 bolts to take off, besides that when you do get it off there will probably be wires connected to it still not sure, dont worry about them just move that whole peice to the side and you should have no troubles

Okay...... you're attempting to hook an amp or some other RCA-driven device onto your stock unit? That's what I gather from the posts.

On a line-out converter, you will usually need to splice into the speaker output wires so that the board can receive the signal from the head unit. It then converts this to a low-level input and sends it out the RCA connections. Check the instructions of the component or talk to the person(s) who made it.

As far as a remote wire, there are a couple of options. The remote is a low-amperage wire that acts like a switch to turn the amplifier on and off. It's usually less than 1 amp... more are coming out these days with .5 - .75 amp fuses. One option is the power antenna wire, but I don't believe that a dakota ANYWHERE has a factory power antenna...... so that pretty much rules that out. The other option is to splice into the main power wire and solder in a voltage reducer that will bring the signal in that wire down to 1 amp or less.

In my opinion? Buy an aftermarket head unit that has RCA pre-outs and a remote lead built into it... it's less expensive in the long run (especially if you run or splice a bad wire and short out the factory unit). Just my 2 cents....

I agree with Pop/Mike above... ditch the factory unit and get a real radio that supplies RCA outs and a power amp lead. Those converters are always a rig job :( almost everyone I know that has used one has been disappointed afterwards.
