Subject: Installing new speakers... assist pls :)

Okay here's the deal, I bought these speakers, Pioneer TS-A1667, because it said using the mounting tabs, these can be put on oversized 6 1/2 inch openings. The only thing is that when I took off my factory speakers, I noticed the screw holes were about an inch away from the actual speaker and it's own holes. Dodge decided to make yet another hassle I guess.

Can anyone give any ideas how I can mount these? Will I have to drill new holes or can I just use some 3M tape, or will that just eventually make the speaker fall out due to vibration?

I have a 2000 CC.

Many, many thanks to anyone who can help. I'll be doing this tomorrow while installing my thunderform. I got halfway done today. :D

I would drill new holes....just make sure there aren't any wires behind the panel where you are drilling. I would use some kind of weather strip or that 3M tape you were talking about to seal it to the door. I would definitely put screws in though...don't rely on tape.

What about a few dabs of an epoxy putty type stuff? Would that be too permanent? hehe. I'm tryin to get around the drilling part. :(

You scared of srilling huh. Look at it this way...no one will ever see it. I would really be afraid of just an epoxy (might be more permanent than screws and might screw up your speakers). Self tapping screws are the way to go. DON'T BE AFRAID MY SON---GET OUT THE DRILL AND PROCEED!!!

LOL, I'm not afraid of drilling, just looking at alternatives that might have not been explored. Thanks though. :)

I always try not to do modifications if I don't have too....but almost always you will have to. I don't think I have ever put in a set of speakers that didn't require a little modification. The thing with tape or epoxy is that tape dries and epoxy might ruin the speakers or the warrenty or both. Speakers in doors take a pounding...not just from driving but from opening and closing the doors. You don't want to have to redo it in a month again if you don't have to.

Good thinking, I didn't think about the long term effects of cutting corners.

Make a mounting ring out of MDF with the correct size opening for you new speakers. Mount the ring up to your existing holes and then mount your new speaker on that. There is plenty of room and it will give your speaker a more solid service to mount to and no drilling into the metal.

email me if you want detailed instructions

MDF rings work well also. But I didn't think he wanted to take the time for that...seemed like he was in a hurry.

If he is in a hurry then he shouln't bother with his stereo stuff now. The worst thing is being anxious and not taking your time when installing a system. You end up doing it twice. Funny though I can never take my own advice.

I'm sure a few of you guys installed a hot wire before without a fuse. Makes for a hell of a smoke show going down the road.

Hey guys, I actually did make the MDF spacer rings after all, and so far they are working great.

Only a couple more things left to do. I have to SOMEHOW get the bolts into the dak, that thunderform is not custom fit... I also need to put the panels back on, I'm about halfway done with one of the back quarter panels, and for some reason my head unit doesn't turn on now. I think I might just go to the dealership and have them put the panels on for me, lol.

But all should be tracked down. Kinda sucks cause I'm going out of town on Saturday and won't be back for a couple weeks.

Get it done before you leave if you can...otherwise you won't remember what needs to be done when you get back. The Thunderforms just require some kicking and swearing to make them fit right....mine responded well to the F-word. Check your fuses for your headunit you may have popped one.

One more thing....the dealership is gonna spank ya if you ask them to put the panels back on. That will cost ya a pretty penny for sure....

Don't give up yet!

Get as many bolts in as you can, you don't have to have all of them.

I just waited till the next day to get the panels back on and it worked with a lil jostling. I think I just needed a good nights sleep before attacking them.

I got everything I needed done, but now my amp won't come on. I think it's cause I forgot to crimp the wire between the remote segments and one popped out. Now if only I could find that crimper...
