Subject: How to wire my aftermarket cd player
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 01 dakota quad cab I am wanting to put in an aftermarket cd player but the factory cd player has 2 extras wires going to it that I have no idea where they go. I wired my cd player up to the harness and hooked it up without these wires but my cd player wouldn't even turn on. My truck has the infinity sound system

What color are the left over wires? Did you ground the cd unit? There should have been a black ground wire connected to a 1/4" lug terminal on the case of the factory radio. Did you verify you have connected to the correct accessory and continuous 12 volt wires and that there is voltage present on both wires?

If the power and ground are OK, and you used an aftermarket radio harness to wire the new cd unit to the factory radio plug, and one of the leftover wires on your harness was blue with a white stripe you need to connect the blue with white stripe remote on wire from the new cd unit to it. That wire turns on the factory installed Infinity amplifier. You won't have any sound at all if the remote on wire isn't connected.

If you have another wire left over from the harness and that wire is orange or orange with a white stripe, it is for the dash light illumination circuit. In most cases it is not used, unless your new unit has a separate illumination or dimmer wire. If so, that's the one you connect it to so it will dim the lights on the new unit when the dash lights are on.

If you did not use an aftermarket harness, and spliced in to the factory radio wiring and one of the left over wires is dark green or dark green with a red stripe, that is the amplifier remote wire. Connect the remote on from the new unit to it. In the factory harness the illumination wire is also orange. With the illumination wire in either wiring scenario, if you don't use it tape it up to insulate it. If it contacts the metal case of the new unit or some other ground source, it will blow the dash light fuse and could cause other problems.
