Subject: Air Space Issue

Message:
I was doing some calculations and things werent making sense to me. To fit a box behind the back seat in my QC the dimension would be 16" high, 14" wide, and 4" deep and the top, and 8.5" deep and the bottomw(with the seat moved forward 1") I keep on getting an air space of .537. Is that right? But dont 10's require min. of .6? Anybody have any suggstions to help me out. Thanks.

no if your dimensions are right and their all inside that should be about .8ft if my calc are right...it seems like your using a slanted faced box...if so..its HxWxD using the top depth + HxDxW with d being the d of the bottom - the top so...16x14x4=896... ((16*4.5)/2)*14=504...504+896=1400 1400/1728=.81

Sorry, the top measurment was supposed to be 5". So, what i did was split the box into a rectangle and triangle and then took the calculations that way. Also, the thickness of the wood takes down the measurements (.75" each way). So i did (H*W*L)
14.5*3.5*12.4=634.375.....then (.5*B*H*L).5*3.5*14.5*12.5=
317.1875.....then add them together=951.56..then 951.56/1728=.55. When i read your explanation, it seem like you are adding some of the same air space together. Maybe i am just mis-understanding.

Josh,

I pegged the same number as you - .81 cuft. However, after I kinda estimated 436 cubic inches for plywood, the volume drops to .58 cuft. Depends on dimensioning.

ADK,

where are the dimensions you provided taken? inside or outside the box? Also, enough polyfill might make the enclosure "feel big enough" for the sub and avoid the "ping" sound from too small of an enclosure. (That is of course if you only have .53 cuft.)

BTW, I'm thinking of getting a single 10" for my QC. What sub are you running? I've been thinking about checking out the low-pro pioneers. maybe a 10" infinity reference. How are you modding the seat? I've heard of people doing this, just not real sure how. I'm thinking about putting it behind the passenger side to get more volume from width. Has anyone heard of doing this?

Good luck and keep us posted!

The measurments i took were from inside the box. What kind of filler are you talking about? Right now i dont have a sub yet. I have a similar box behind each seat right now with a 12" Blaupunkt OD Shallow Mount (2.5") sub but sounds horrible due to lack of air space. I was thinking or the 10" L5 but i dont know if they will fit. I think they might just fit. Kicker also makes a shallow mount sub (3.5-4.5") but i dont know how they will sound. The mod i am doing to the seats is just moving them further forward. Someone posted a pic not too long ago of it. All they did was drill a new hole in the seat braket 1" back and then bolted it downd. Also, i am going to remove the back material wall and the vents and replace it with some FAT MAT, DYNAMAT, or something similar. Also, you can cut the pegs on the back of the seat so you can lift up the seat and then fold it down.

(take the spaces out - it wouldnt let me post with the word s@x - lmao!)

Easy enough seat mod. The dynamat wouldnt be a bad idea. I always kind of thought the truck was loud going down the road. If I could pick up a ton of it for under $200, I might do the entire truck, floor to windows. Another thing I'm considering is buying the marine enclosures for my 6.5s and hardenind them with resin to create an "enclosure" so they can handle the power better.

I had considered the 10" L5, but I'm only going to be running 300W RMS, and that is probably not enough for an L5. I might try an 8" L5. (square 8 - 64 in sq, while round 8 - 50 in sq.) I'm just looking for some good, clean, stable bass (I listen mostly to rock). Nothing that will rattle teeth.

Again, keep us posted and good luck.

How about something like this...

http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/aud/3528.html

I didn't like having the sub(s) behind the seats, as there wasn't enough room for my liking, so I built a center console down-fire. I got rid of the truck last summer, so if you want the box and sub (Inifinity Perfect 12") we could work something out.

As far as Dymamat or FatMan, the stuff is pretty expensive. I lined my QC with elastomeric roofing membrane, seriously cut the road noise and was inexpensive, $20/roll at Home Depot Lowes. I put down 2 layers in the doors and other surfaces.

DSW,

Thats one sweet looking install, but I have to agree with Graphite. I dont care for center console enclosures (even though I had one in my Y2K RC dak.) [that was just the center seat disassembled to the frame, frame wrapped in fiberglass, and then cut a hole for an 8" MTX. nothing great, but did provide some stable lows, much more so than my coaxes could ever deliver.] And thanks for offering to sell your enclosure, but unless you lived next door, I dont think I could afford the shipping on something like that.

As for the sound dampening, I'll look into that. Did you put it on the floors, or just on the doors? I'm willing to rip out seats and carpet. Like I said, I would have to get a steal on dynamat to do it.

ADK,

What side are you building the box for - passenger or drivers side? Right now I have my 4 channel amp mounted under the passenger (front) seat. But I might try to move both amps (when I mount my sub amp) to behind the rear passenger seat or behind the rear drivers side seat if there's room.

I know I keep posting on this subject, but I'm glad I found someone who has the same truck and close to the same project to bounce ideas off of.

Has anyone heard of the soft speaker protectors I mentioned earlier? I remember seeing them on crutchfields website years ago, but now I cant find them anywhere. They were just foam "baskets" that mounted between the speakers and the door to protect them from water leaking from windows, etc. I always thought they would make nice enclosures if stiffened up with resin. Would it even be worth it? I would like to get 100Hz out of my fronts before the crossover slope (I would like to use a 6db/octave slope). Thoughts?

Jay,
The boxes i have right now fit behind the seat with out any modification to the seat. There is one box behind each of the seats. They were just the right to where i could fit the box and my amp behind the passenger seat. Im pretty sure the air space is right at about .5-.6 which i know is a little low but i had some old Kenwood 10"s in there and they sounds alright. So if you find a sub that you can cramp the space on, these will be perfect. I pretty much coppied the design from supercrewsound.com. i just didnt make them as wide because of the vents back there. I tried to keep my truck as original as i can but i dont think that is going to fly anymore! I thought about mounting the amp under the seats but i dont think there is enough room, unless you have a very thin amp.

DWS,
What does your box look like from the front? Do you have any pics of that part? Also, how did you get a 12" to fit. I measured that area on mine and it only looks like i could fit a 10" and that would be squeezing it!

Jay,

The floor of my 03 QC was pretty well covered from the factory, it's the back of the cab and skin of doors that needed the sound dampening. I removed the air vents of the cab back, covered the whole thing with the roofing membrane, then installed the amp board and reinstalled the carpeted panel. On the foam enclosures, it might suffocate the mids and ruin some of your low-mids, the door speakers are designed to have the air volume of the door. I had my Infinity mids (not stock) crossed at 80hz and the sub at 50hz by the Pioneer deck, can't remember the slope, but the transition was great between the lows and mids. Center console or behind seat sub box is a tough decision on a QC, I opted for center console so I could still keep the jack in it's stock location and jumper cables, tow strap, tow hitch, etc, etc behind the other seat. And yeah, shipping would probably be kind of high since the box is BUILT, I think the fiberglass sides were around 3/8" thick and everything else was 3/4" MDF.

ADK,

The sub enclosure is flared at the bottom to fit the 12" sub, it overhangs the top of the tranny hump, but isn't as wide as the floor,,, if that makes sense. The enclosure is 1 cuft and extends up into the center console, there's about 3-4" between the front of the sub enclosure and the front inside of the console, enough room to plug something into the power outlet. Inside the console and on top of the enclosure there's about 2-3" of room for storage. I'll have to see if I have any more pics of it in my old truck, truck is gone and computer that had pics lost a HDD, so I don't know what I have.

I also had a 00 CC, in that truck the amps were mounted under the passenger and drivers seats, was a very tight squeeze as the seats would bump the amps when moved. If I was cranking it on road trips I had to keep the AC blowing to the floor or the sub amp would overheat. Mounting the amps behind the passenger seat in the QC worked better.
