Subject: replacing stock infinity system

Message:
greeting to all. i have recently bought a 2000 dodge dakota quad cab two weeks ago. It has the stock Infintiy stero system: head unit, amp, tweeters, front and back door speakers. iam wanting to replace the head unit and the door speakers, since all four are blown, in the truck. i have a Pioneer DEH-p4500mp head unit that i had in my last truck.

i have spent the past few days looking through the past 35 pages on infomation on how to do all this and tips on what should be left and everything. but i have gotten confused by reading so much.

so i decided to ask my own questions.

the size of the frount and back door speakers are 6.75" correct? i went to a website that had a size chart for the various vehicles and it said to get 7" speaker to replace the stock.

since i have the factor Infintiy system do i ahve to buy a special wiring harness to have my pioneer head unit work properly?

do i have to bypass the factory amp when replacing the head unit and speakers?

well thats all for now, thank you for looking and helping me...

No need to get 7" speakers. You can use a good 6" or 6 1/2" speaker. You can use the original speaker as a template and make a mounting bracket for the new speakers out of medium-density fiberboard (mdf). You can get mdf at Home Depot. There are 6 3/4" speakers out there for purchase, but even these are not quite large enough to exactly fit the stock speaker location. A lot of guys here have bought the plastic speaker adapters off Ebay or from Crutchfield. That works too, but mdf is just better, in my opinion.

You don't need a special harness to interface with the Infinity amplifier. Any car audio store, Best Buy or Circuit City will have the harness you need. Just be sure to connect the blue with white striped wires to turn on the Infinity amp with your Pioneer unit. Best Buy, etc. will also have the installation kit to fit your Pioneer unit in the dash.

You can interface with the Infinity amp, but the system will get too loud too fast. Meaning that at a low level on the volume knob the sound will still be fairly loud and not in proportion to the volume knob position. I had a 2000 CC Dakota and put in an Alpine unit interfaced with the Infinity amplifier and it sounded good. Try it and see how you like it.

Hope this helps,

Jimmy

thank you for your help, i went out and ended up buying Polk 6 1/5" coaxial speakers and they came with a adapter plate for various sizes and configurations of holes. i had to cut off the little white plug for the Infinity's and put female blade connectors.

the wiring harness almost stumped me but i came back here and looked around for a little while until i saw a post saying about the power antenna wire goes to the amp wire.

thank you again for your help.

You can remove the big plastic spacer from the old infinity speakers. Then screw the new speakers to the old spacers (You'll need to drill some pilot holes so you don't split the plastic). Then they mount on the door panel just like the factory infinity speakers did. No clearance issues with the window, perfect fit in all four doors. I did this with my Boston SL60's and SL65's and it worked perfectly. I mounted the passive crossovers for the components inside the door panel as well.
