I used to have a 2001 extended cab and I replaced the stereo with an Alpine head unit, single cd/mp3, one 4 channel 900 watt amp (under passenger seat) and one 300 watt mono subamp (under drivers seat) powering 2 10" subs in a box that took up half the back bench seat. I put the top of the line Bostons all the way around as I like the rear imaging more than most.

Now I have a 2006 H/O club cab with the Alpine system (9 speakers including a silly factory Soundbox with an extra amp, 10" sub and two tweeters). Doesn't even come close to my old system as far as tightness, bass, and loudness.

I still have the 900 watt 4 channel amp. Need suggestions on a mod for under $1000. Don't like the Q-Logic kickers. Want to keep the factory head unit since it has controls on the steering wheel, Sirius attached and a six CD changer. Debating on mounting my old amp under the drivers seat, bypassing the factory four channel amp and putting CDT's in the front and rear. I'll just leave the rear Soundbox hooked up as is and deal with the wimpy bass it puts out. If anyone has modded these boxes without too much destruction, please tell.

Should I add an equalizer? Can I add an equalizer?

So many options, too confused, but want to get it right the first time. Hard enough getting behind the passenger side airbag to get to the factory amp.

Sorry for the long post, hoping some audiophiles could help out...

clean house and start over. You'll need to completely remove the factory 6-channel amp, if you don't then the radio will be stuck in fixed-level-output mode (the amplifier actually controls the volume, bass/treb/bal/fade, etc.)

second, you'll have to add the four wires at the radio for the front speakers. With the amplifier, Chrysler only uses the rear left and right speaker outputs to send audio to the amp, then the amp takes care of channel mixing.

I'd ditch/sell the soundbox, myself. it's only 140 watts (70x2,) the speaker can handle a good bit more power but the enclosure can't. It was a dumb product designed almost entirely by marketing, and dumped on the audio guys/Alpine to try to make it work.

BTW, two more things:

"Should I add an equalizer?"

I would, since you're going to lose the equalization present in the factory amp.

Also, you might want to consider keeping the existing Alpine door speakers. They're actually quite good.

Jim,
Thanks greatly for your response. I'm working with a show - custom guy that's doing my truck for a reasonable price. He's designed an interface that come of the HU. I'm putting mid-grade CDT's all the way around (high grade for any other system). I'll take your suggestion on the Soundbox, although at a later date... cost strapped on what I'm adding currently.

What you said about pre-amp controls being maintained at the spearate amp is interesting. I'm going to have to follow up with my custom guy on that.

Your posts were very helpful, I'll keep you informed.

I just put a custom cat-back dual out the rear with a Magnaflow in, sound is awesome on that.
