Which amp do you have? Another question to ask is, are you going to stick only with the amp you have? I had a KAC-729 (Kenwood) and I was sure it would not fit...but it did.

Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.)
Future mods: Tonneau cover

Right now I have a Soundstream ref405 which is 15"X10"X21/4" which is to long to fit under my front seats.
I'm currently in the market for a more powerful amp which will only make the lack of room more of a problem.

Ah, ok. I know that there's two types of people. The first is myself, who will use any amp that will sufficiently drive the Thunderforms, and for that the amp I listed above both worked beautifully and fit easily under the drivers seat. If you want the most power you can get, then it is more likely that an amp you get won't fit. Just trying to help, though. If you don't need the MOST power you can get, take a look at the amp above.

I have a 99 slt ex-cab with the thunderform box. I have a Highphonics Zuse amp which is 600x1 bridged into 4 ohms. I wired both of those subs in parallel. This amp slams those subs and is only 14" x 12". I mounted it on the driverside back floor and I also have a M44 Phoenix Gold amp for my Boston Pro's behind the pass seat on the floor. I made a carpeted platform to sit over them both with vents on each ends and they stay plenty cool and even looks good. There is more room than you think. My phoenix gold is about 20" wide and 14" deep. I also keep my seat back pretty far seeing that I'm 6'2" tall. No problems here!!!

fourgivn1, Actually I'm not all that power hungry it's just that my amp is only rated at 25X4+100X1 and I'm running Boston Pro Series comps(front) Focal Polykevlar comps(rear)which need a decent amount of power. I'm also very picky on my amp brands my short list includes, Phoenix Gold,Soundstream,Zapco,A/D/S,PPI,Arc and Helix to name a few. But thanks for your reccomendation.

Nick, do you have any pics of your amp setup? I've considered doing that, but I thought it my look "ghetto" having the amp on the floor.

DAKMAN..the 405s is rated at 25x4 and 100x1 however soundstreams ratings are extremely conservative..they rate them at 12volts where as most rate that at 14.4 or 13.8. anyways in my experience the soundstreams crush other amps in their rating class. According to the former Soundstream distributors in Canada the 405 was the best sounding amp they put out. and the sub channel is insane it will run 1/2 ohm load without killing itself.
Hang on to that one...I am!!!

Altf, thanks and your right. My problem is once a year I get the itch to upgrade even though my system is fine(although my bazooka really does suck), so I think my plan is to only upgrade my sub.
But I still need your help
Do I get a JL stealthbox(my amp would still fit but it's like $600 for one 8" sub)

get a thunderform(put my amp on the
floor "ghetto" behind my seat)

find a small sub box like the JL microsub that might fit(with mods to the tray) underneath my rear bench and still have room to mount my amp under the rear bench also

thanks

I'm not familiar with the jl box. I'll check it out.
I had bad stereo day yesterday.. I was starting my install I pulled the dash of hooked up the line level converter(wanted to keep stock look). the converters were screwed out phase channels swapped and so on....argg I spent 2 hrs rechecking wiring the whole bit.finally rewired back to stock deck works fine..piss me off.
At least I got my new fronts in and all my rcas/ speaker wire and power/ground in. basically I'm stock with new fronts for now..but 3/4 of the upgrade is done(the pain in the butt part)
NOw I gotta find a nice head unit and build a box for sub and I'm running. The stock deck has some weird freq settings too..the rear outputs has way more bottom end and less highs. So I'm gonna pull the sucker out!

Dakman, I finally got my Stealthbox installed yesterday. Have had it kicking around forever and finally got it put in. Using a Zapco AG150 to drive. More than enough bump for me, but I'm an old fart of 41 ;) I was more interested in SQ than decibels, but this think does pretty well for a single 8".

Other pieces that went in at the same time: Alpine 7893, JL Audio 300/4, MB Quart QM218.61s. Pretty happy with the way it turned out though I have to move my Zapco because it's not allowing the rear seat to fold down all the way. We had the interior ripped out of the back to have it recovered in leather, and weren't watching the amp placement.

You could build your own box to fit in where the factory tool tray is and have plenty of room for your amp. I built my box to hold 2 JL 10w3s and there is plenty of room between the subs for most any amp if I wanted to modify my bos and lower it in the middle. And it is probably cheaper then your other options. My box pics are at http://www.sounddomain.com/id/dakfiveoh
And there are plenty of other examples of what I am talking about on that board

I am managing to find a simpler solution to my bass problem. (Or lack thereof.) The tool tray on the driver's side is more than deep enough to hold one 8", and probably 2, so the local shop is going to build me a baffle board that I will basically insert into the tool tray, mount the subs in, and screw into the tool tray. The most that will be done to the OEM tray is drilling some minor holes to mount the board to. After all, that's essentially what the Stealthbox is....they just take it further, and ask $600 for it. :)

Thanks for all your help.

After much thought I've decided to go with the Thunderform. My reasons for this was that I don't have the time or the tools to build a custom box and the stealthbox was too much money for one 8" sub.

Now my only problem is what subs will fit the thunderform because the new IDQ10 V.2(what I wanted) don't fit and the old IDQ10 are no longer available.

I don't know if you guys know, but the JL stealthboxes are made out of 3/8" handlaid fiberglass, not plastic. They also dont come up with these boxes overnight, meaning they do a lot of research and development. These enclosures are TUNED to their respective vehicle. They try different size subs, different types of subs, different enclosure types until they get the response they are looking for. I have had the fortunate experience of listening to 80% of the different ones they offer, and they all sound excellent. It is not even a comparison to the cheap imitions out there, these guys are the inventor of the stealthbox. Remember that each enclosure comes with the sub because they know that one size does NOT fit all. Lastly, these enclosures are meant for sound quality above anything else.

TweeterGuy, when I started this post(over a year ago)I was trying to decide wether or not to go with the Stealthbox which has one eight inch sub for $600 or an MTX Thunderform(loaded with two IDQ10's) for about the same money.

I agree with you the JL is a nice piece, it's just that I think the Thunderform makes more since in the Dakota because you can have two ten's. Do you agree?
