Subject: Amp Fuse Blowing
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a Zapco AG350 series ( old school i know ). The fuse keeps blowing almost immediately after it is powered on. The only wires that are still hooked to it is the 1. power 2. cable from the battery 3. ground.

all cables are hooked up in the right places and the fuse is the right size.

If anyone can tell me how to fix this problem or if the problem is the amp it self i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Sounds like the amp is toasted, I had the same problem on an old school RF amp. I sent it to RF and they fixed it for free, but that was 10 years ago, couple of power transistors fried.

Pop the cover off the amp and see if there is anything that looks fried or discolored. You might be surprised to find something in the amp shorting it out. When I removed my RF Punch 150 that had been installed under the drivers seat for 10 years, it sounded like a slot machine. There was about $5 worth of loose change rolling around inside. I couldn't beleive the thing still worked with all that loose metal floating around inside.

Might be worth calling Zapco to see if they can fix the amp. I remember back in the day Zapco was the sh1t!

OH BTW, what size fuse is the amp blowing?

i did send it back to zapco a little bit ago and they did fix a small piece and sent it back saying it worked. so that's why i am hoping it is a wiring problem. the fuse a is a 40a fuse, which is the recommended max for that amp.

DSW is right on, sounds like a toasted power transistor. long ago i had an old pioneer amp i worked on and forgot to put an insulator back under one of the transistors on the amplifier side and as soon as i powered it up it blew the 30 amp power fuse. when that happened i turned and saw the insulator i forgot laying on my workbench beside the amp. DOH!
if you open it up and look at it you'll porbably see it and possibly fix it for about a buck. transistors are cheap.

Here's something to try;

disconnect all wires except ground

reconnect the power with and 40A fuse,,, did the fuse blow?

reconnect the remote turn on wire,,, did the fuse blow?

reconnect the RCA cables,,, did the fuse blow?

reconnect the speaker wires,,, did the fuse blow?

This will give you some indication as to what the problem is, maybe there's a shorted speaker wire or the stereo is overdriving the amp and causing the fuse to pop.

Is there any noise coming from the amp when it's turned on or does the fuse blow immediately.

If Zapco just worked on the amp I'd send it back and have them "fix" it this time. I work with a lot of refurb electronic parts and it's amazing how many of them are DOA or die within a short period of time.
