I told you guys last week I would be fitting two 12" kicker subs into the regular cab of my dakota without having to push the seats all the way forward... and I started today. heres a few teaser shots until the fiberglass dries and I can pop the mold:

Its my first go at an enclosure of this scale, so it will probaly not be the best one ever mad, but it should work just fine. I'll have the rest of the mold made by tonight and the fleece pulled over and started then also. So I hope.

Keep us updated bwith some pix as it developes. I'm with you. I love home made sh*t vs. doing what everyone else does/buys. I haven't been shy about cutting into my Dak either.

If it don't work as to planned, no biggie, that's learning. Rip it out and try something else :) That's what I do.

Great to hear some encouragment :) We got it out, no problem at ALL. I was so worried I would break it, but with one coat, it came out fine. One part was very thin and brittle, so I did a second coat and third coat over it all, and it seems to be looking VERY good. I am so shocked by the utter strength of this thing, and its great how it conforms to every little pocket :) I went out and got the fleece today, pics are below.. its girly because I figured it would encourage me to get it painted/carpented(more likely) as soon as I can.

Bastards at homedepot only had giant sheets of MDF today, so I'm going to a lumber yard tommorow to get a scrap sheet, so I can build the wooden square for the kicker.

Not a big visual diffrence between first layer and the third.. but WOW, it got so strong. I can't imagine after another 5 coats, and the fleece. Right now the only issue is that the bottom was flexing a lot, but it was one coat, and wasn't attached to anything.

Heres the latest picture of it after coats:

Heres the super girly fleece I bought at wal-mart:

Over all, I am very impressed with fiberglass, and gotta say.. there is definitely a lot to learn, but I think over all I did well. I botched about 1/4 of a quart of resin because i added too much hardener..

Oh, btw, where can I get resin by the gallon here in Phoenix, Arizona? I was thinking to check at the local lakes.. sound good?

Look in the phone book for West Marine, Boaters World or boat store, they sell fiberglass supplies. Better yet, go to a shop/store that sells or works/repairs fiberglass. On my last glass project I went to a fiberglass shop (found them in the phone book) that also sells raw materials to the public and spent $50 for supplies, $20 for gallon of resin and $30 for 3/4 oz cloth, 1 oz mat, 2oz mat and 3 oz mat. It's easier when you have the right materials. Also pick up a "fiberglass roller" it's a neat little tool to help roll resin into/out of the fiberglass.

I too had to overcome adding in too much hardener, my main problem was not getting all the resin out of my measuring cup and throwing off the ratio. To solve the problem I got a rubber spatula from the kitchen (kind used to mix batter, not flip eggs) to remove all the resin from the measuring cup, then I would use the spatula to mix the resin, this really helped mixing since it would scrape the sides of the mixing bowl nicely. Also, I reduced the amount of hardener, if the resin said 14 drops per oz, I was using 11 or 12 drops per oz. Check your resin as some will take more hardener than others.

WOW that is some Manly looking fleece there,,, LOL

I know, it scares me sometimes. I snuggled with it last night as I watched the lifetime channel though.

I gotta go get some MDF today after work, maybe during lunch, so I can make the rings, then I can pull fleece tonight. Any tips for applying the resin to the fleece? Just stab the fleece with the brush?

Thanks

Just paint the resin onto the fleece and make sure she soaks in good, different process than trying to stimple (stab) the resin and fiberglass into your form, you don't have to worry about the fibers of the fleece pulling apart like the glass mat. Only part you might need to stimple is the fleece to rings, need to get enough resin through the fleece and into the MDF, the MDF will drink it a little, but not bad.

Update

Message:
hey everyone , just to update everyone. I went out and
listened to some kicker subs, and I dislike the sound of
it.. can't put my finger onto it, but I dislike the SQ
somewhat.. after listening around a bit, I decided I'm
gonna probaly go with some 10" MTX 5500 Dual Voice
coils, I'll have more then enough volume, and I like the
SQ better. I could of fit the kicker's, and I already made
the rings for it.. but I think the MTX's will sound better.

So, after school tonight(School, work, back to school for
me today), I'll make the ring's and fleece it over. I'll
have pictures tonight or tommorow.

Ooh. Olive Garder. You B@stard! I like Olive Garden. Not a big fan of their pasta, but I LOVE how you get the endless salad!

That is cool. I live further West. But west is at least west as far as the valley goes. At least you're NOT in Scottsdale, Tempe, etc.

44th and Peoria is close to my work. 24th and Peoria. I only go there to the shop. Then I'm all over in my work vehicle until i drive it home.

Yes. We could all meet. So far I've been meeting Dak guys from the West side out at SpeedWorld.

So far the one's I've met there are
Duner
ProwlR/T
1Hotkakota

and some others I really don't remember their names. Duner I haven't seen again out there. Don't think he comes to SpeedWorld unless it's something special. He may use Firebird primarily and he doesn't frequent this site like he used to. I did enjoy seeing his truck with the lil' 4.7 run 12's tho :)

ProwlR/T I've actually ran into again in town as we were driving, he lives around 19th and T-Bird. And he also went to the cinders the same weekend I did last month.

Let's see if DSW chimes in again where he lives.
We could make plans one of these weekends for a mini Dak meet.

And my promised update.

I finished the ring's tonight. What a bitch, I went to home depot to get the dremel bit for cutting the wood, got it home, it barely worked.. AND

The frigen thing kept burning the wood.

So I ended up ditching that, and just being very careful with a jigsaw, and sanding it to hell when done. No fleece yet, didn't have the proper time to resin it.. so

TOMMOROW! Maybe! :P

Used to live in Phx, had an apt on 19th and Peoria while going to DeVry. Moved to Las Vegas after graduating and had not been back to Phx in over 10 years. Work had me in Phx for a week, 2 weeks ago,,, D@NM that place has grown.

Happy Valley Rd,,, isn't that the fug'd up exit off I-17 that has round-abouts instead of stop lights, maybe it's the next exit. Man what a cluster, I needed a cell phone charger from Walley World and hit that intersection coming in from Flag at 5PM. Only make that mistake once... LOL

Rings, too bad you aren't up in Vegas. I made a circle jig for my router, now it only takes a couple of minutes to pop out a sub hole or MDF ring...

When you lived here last, it was all FIELDS where I live now.

130th Ave and T-Bird.

It's a good drive WEST form I17.

College_dak, yours has a 4 cyclinder? I know they stopped making them at one point.
So when you said don't NOCK the 4 banger, you meant at the drags??? LOL!

Throw a TURBO on that biatch. That's what I'd do.
Then most people wouldn't mock it too much.

Ya, its got the 4 banger.. it sucks except for when I cruise by the gas station. It does 70 mph on the freeway at like 2600rpm or some crap, so its not too bad. I'd throw a turbo on it.. but then I wouldn't be saving to build up a fiero, now would I? :)

BTW, Got the ring's hot glue'd in and everything, gonna head out and fleece it as soon as I am confident I like the ring's angle
