Subject: 05 - new radio, no power
IP: Logged

Message:
hey - trying to put in a new radio into my 05. i've swapped out radio's before with no problems but seem to be stuck. I've pulled out the old radio, got the ant. adaptor and face plate, etc. but when i wire up the harness to match like to like (+/-) and plug in the stereo - nada... i've read some threads about needing to by pass an amp behind the kick board for earlier year trucks. does this apply to the 05 as well? if so, how does one go about wiring the harness to get power & also how does one go about bypassing the amp on an 05 dak? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the radio not turning on at all? The problem is most likely the fact that these trucks no longer run an ACC/ignition-on power wire to the radio. The '05 and up CAN-Bus radios do not use key-on power wires, instead they are designed to power up when sent a command from the CAN FCM (front control module) over the vehicle communication bus. You will have to run an additional wire the the aftermarket radio which is a switched +12 volt source.

also, if you have the Infinity system, you will have to bypass the amplifier as well by running new wires from the head unit to the speakers. Part of this is for the same reason as the radio. The amplifier also does not have power up via a remote wire anymore; instead it powers up when when it receives a command from the radio over CAN-Bus. Further, when the radio detects that the factory amp is installed, the radio goes into "fixed output mode" which means that the output level stays at one fixed setting. Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble, Balance, and Fade are then done by the amplifier in response to commands sent by the radio.

hey - thanks! nope, no power at all. Think i got the 'run an additional wire the the aftermarket radio which is a switched +12 volt source' - just not to clear on where to connect this to (&/or which wire on the harness to use... yellow pwr/red pwr?). I assume that by switched - you mean turns on when key is turned on... please let me know if I'm completely off base here...
as for the 2nd part - makes sence. the amp is looking for a signal from the radio to output "sound" to the speakers... assuming that my alpine doesn't do that- if I re-run new wire to each of the four speakers straight from the radio I should be okay. correct?
Thanks for helping out a fellow dak owner!

you've got it. the key-on wire needs to be connected to the radio's red wire.

that's the way to do it, but I forgot something- the Infinity system uses 2 ohm speakers, and a radio isn't going to like driving those.
