Subject: Need Advice...3 or 4 ways?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have a 2004 club cab. I don't have the infinity system, but I do have CD player. I definitly want to keep my factory head unit, and I'm looking at some pioneers that I want. Which would be better for my factory head unit, 6.5 3 ways, or 6.5 4 ways? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Coaxial speakers sound better than 3-way or 4-way 6.5" speakers, something to do with the cancellation of certain frequencies produced by the multiple elements of the 3-way and 4-way speakers.

Actualy, component speakers would give you the best sound. Mid-woofer mounted in the stock 6.5" location and a 1" tweeter mounted in the door panel "sail" (top front corner of the door panel). When you take the door panel off you will see the premarked hole for the OEM tweeter.

Remember, the stock speakers are 2 ohm and aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm. The replacement speakers will be about 1/2 as loud as the stock speakers.

I didn't know our stock speakers were 2 ohm. Hmm...

Anyway. I notices, too late at that, that there is PRE WIRING behind the plastic for tweeters :)

I already started to run wiring down to the door speakers for my tweeters I installed before I noticed them factory tweeter wiring!!!!

and he's right about installing tweeter UP HIGH in the front of the doors.

Bass is NON directional.

The HIGHER frequencies are very much directional.

Down low where the stock 6.5's are they would not be very clear.

Oh, once you have tweeters, and then you test them by BLOCKING the sound with your hands to hear the difference, you will NEVER go without tweeters again :)

Just put in 1" tweeters in the sail panels, best thing I ever did, besides putting in an amp to run the whole thing.

So if the stock speakers are 2 ohm and I added tweeters to the front channel are the ohms even lower on the front channel now?

Man, I heard our speakers were 2ohm... who woulda guessed that one? I hope my amp will be ok. I currently have only the front channel amped w/ a 100 x 2 sherwood amp, but I was going to tie the rears in this weekend.
That would make the total Ohms very low, probably below 1 Ohm.
What effect will this have on my amp and Sound Quality?

Should I replace the stock speakers w/ 4 ohms now before amping the rear speakers.
Total Ohms for 2 fronts, 2 rears, and the 2 tweets I added will be really low??

well you are only droping ohms if you wire your speakers together. your tweeters are not cutting your ohms up front. what do you have for a chanel amp? if you have 4 2ohm speakers, and a four chanel amp, you should be running you speakers at 2ohms each. if you have a 2 chanel amp, you are now running at 1ohm per speaker, not too good. the lower the ohms the more power you are getting to your speakers, but you do scarifice quality. idealy, you should have each speaker run at 4 ohms for good sound quality.

I put a meter to my speakers and they are all 4Ohm, I don't have the infinity system so maybe thats why?

I am running the system off a 2 channel and yesterday wired everything together w/ good results.

I am getting a 2 ohm load on each channel which ain't optimal, but will have to do for now due to budget. Eventually I will get a new 4 channel and some good 6.5's .

I just didn't want to be running 1 ohm to each channel and fry the amp.

Just curious why the tweeters arn't creating additional load up front? They are 4 Ohm tweeters hooked up to the factory wiring left behind the panel (nice to see when I took the panel off by the way).

Woudln't they be wired to the factory door in parallel creating a lower total Ohm on the front channel?
