Subject: Custom Box For CC
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok I have built a custom box for my CC. The bottom is fiberglass and the sides are fiberboard. I have 2 4Ohm JL 10w6s Loaded into it. my question is 1 It is not completely airtight. When filled with water to check volume it drips slightly from the corners where the fiberglass meets the wood. How much will this affect my sound? and 2 Is it possible to reverse the back seats so they fold to the front insted of to the back, and if so how is this done?

Leaky box is a big problem, if you want your subs to perform right and keep them safe you need to have a air tight box (even if its ported). You need to ruff up the wood a little before you apply any more fiberglass so it sticks. Get a dremal or something and runs some grooves down the wood. Apply at least 2 to 3 more coats over the entire box, not just your seams. When your done, dump some liquid fiberglass into the inside of the box and move it around so it soaks all the corners real good. Let it try for a day. That should give you a good seal. Those JL subs can and will blow a hole right through a weak box and this will sound like crap and you risk blowing a sub.

Bolt your seat cushions to some wood useing the existing bolts then use some velcro or a hinge on your new box.

Send me a pic so I can help supervise....just kidden, but I would like to see your box. You will find that its better to do a little more work now then have to yank that sucker back out and repair it. Beside if its real nice you can sell it later on down the road.

what do you mean reverse the seats so they fold to the front instead of the back?
do you mean make it so the guys in the back seat (when sitting) have to look to the back of the truck? IE mounting seats on the back of the drivers and passengers seats?

im confused...

No, I was just going to reverse the seat bottoms so that instead of folding up against the back wall of the cab they would fold toward the front seats. Moving the hinges from the back of the seat to the front of the seat. But I got lucky and don't have to so they are gonig to remain in their stock location. Pics will be forthcoming.

Why not just use some Silicon to seal the edges. That's what I use and it seems to work really good. Just make sure the type that you get(if you choose this route) is flexible when dry. Otherwise the speakers will blow the seal right out.

Silicon will not stick to fiberglass as good as just adding some more fiberglass. You can even buy fiberglass that is thick like bondo. And just spread it over the entire inside of the box. Plus the resin will dry quicker and last forever.

Sorry man I live in Houston, but you can fly me up there.

Ok well I using silicon on the wood to wood joints and fiberglass on the other joints I got it to seal all except for one small pin hole that I can't find. I added three more layers of fiberglass and hoped that would fix it but it didn't. so I am going to use it as is, If my subs make it worse and it sounds like dirt then I will rebuild it using what I learned building the first one. Pics will be posted as soon as I get a chance to post them. Also, is 16 gauge speaker wire big enough to run say 500w through? I know bigger would be better but I have a 100' spool of 16 gauge and would prefer to save myself the money.

You can get a can of sound dampening and spray the entire inside of the box, that may kill your leak. Did you ever try the fiberglass putty, some call it kittyhair? It works like bondo and can seal up some big holes.

But your probably at the stage of "I can't waite any longer to hear my subs!" Screw the damn box.

You can run multiple wires, just make sure they are the exact same length. Otherwise it way not work as well.

I don't think it's better but it will help. And it probably more like 14 awg. Don't be a cheap skate, skip a value meal and buy yourself some good wire.

Anybody got any ideas for a decent head unit, that isn't to terribly expensive. I was looking at the sony explod series, they seem to be good radios and The red will match my truck.

I wish I had time to build them and sell them, But it took me almost 2 months of work to get mine to where I like it. But i will gladly help talk you through it if you would like me to. The box is about 50" wide by about 14" Deep. the height is different because of the irregular shape of the pan underneath. I'm 6'2" and have no problem sitting in the back seat (my head is about 2 inchs from the roof but I can fit) there is no need to move the front seat at all. I should have more pics up sometime soon I have just been to busy working on it and not spending anytime surfing the net. The rear seats still drop down but I had to lift them about 1/2" in the back and about 2 1/2" in the fron to allow the subs to move. I lifted the seat with wood blocks carpeted to match the box. I have pics of all this so you will be able to see them soon.

5/0, nice job, I hope mine comes out as smooth. I know how you feel about time though, I've been working on mine for three weeks now.

One question - what did you use to get the floor pan impression? I got the bright idea of lining the bottom of the tool tray with aluminum foil then spraying it with spray foam. When the foam dried, I was going to use it as the form for the fiberglass, but the damn stuff shrank too much. So I'm thinking of just lining the pan with foil or something and glassing over that. Unless you have other input.

Also, to those who are thinking about tearing up the stock tool tray, replacement cost is $289 (I checked). For that little plastic piece of $hit. PN 5EM01JX8AG

That is exactly how I created the mold. the only differnce is I put plastic sheets under the aluminum foil so that if any of the glass came out I had another layer to protect the truck from the glass. Also I don't know if you have ever worked with fiberglass before but the fiberglass mat seemed to be much easier to work with then the fiberglass cloth.
Hopefully this weekend the weather will cooperate with me and I can finish putting all my equipment in. I will post pics when I get it all done.

I worked with fiberglass for the first time this weekend. I helped a friend build an enclosure that went into the spare tire well of his Accord. The best way to make your fiberglass mold is to lay plastic down, then smear a thin layer of vaseline all over it. The plastic will not stick to the fiberglass at all. I have heard that the foil idea can lead to foil being stuck in the fiberglass.

Okay, I'm new to the whole stereo game, and just having a new Dak, I don't want to mess it up right away. I am starting to build a custom sub enclosure, but just wondering what is up with the fibreglass, do you build the top and sides out of mdf and then form the fibreglass mats to the base of the truck? If so, where can I get the fibreglass? (I'm in Ottawa, Ontario) Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am still just a beginner.

Ciao
