Subject: Removing rear underseat toolbox?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, I have a 92' Dakota LE extended cab, and I just picked up 2 12's to put in it. I was looking around and I saw the http://www.scunder.com/mike/Box/Box.html page and want to do that, minus the fiberglassing. My question is how do you remove that stock under the seat toolbox? Just pry it up with a crow bar or something? Is it glued or screwed in? Thanks..

Also, is it necesary to fiberglass the well like the guy did on that scunder site? If so, what is the reason behind it? Is there anything I could use instead of fiberglass?

Open one of the compartments and you will see bolts on the bottom. I think there are two bolts on each side, its been awhile since I took mine out. After you get it out put the bolts back in the floor to plug the holes.

The only way to maximize the air space below the seats is to do like the scunder site showed. You could build a 100% MDF box, but you will loose a lot of air volume from the box, MDF is thicker and won't conform to the irregular shape of the floor. Fiberglassing is pretty easy once you get the hang of it and not too expensive if you get your supplies at a boat shop/marine store. The only problem is you need to put down many (8-10, maybe more) layers of fiberglass to get the box rigid. 10-15 minutes per layer, 30 minutes or so to setup, next layer, next layer,,, it's time consuming. I spent almost a whole day glassing the bottom my enclosures, just find things to do while the resin sets up,,, definately a 12 pack job ;)

Check out websites explaining the construction of fiberglass sub boxes. There are a couple of good ones that will save you a ton of grief.

Well my subs call for 1.25 cubic feet each. What if I caulk the seams between the box and metal on the floor and put a divider between the subs? Is the glass only to get the box all one piece with no gaps to the open air?

The glass is used to keep the bottom of the box from flexing (and also to seal the box air tight). Fiberglass is very hard and rigid if it's thick enough. If any portion of the box flexes it's going to make the subs sound bad. That's why 3/4" MFD is commonly used for building sub boxes of this size.

The metal bottom of the truck is not a good option, though I have heard of people doing it this way.

OK. I think what I'll do is try it out without the glassing, and if it sounds crappy I'll go ahead and glass the bottoms.

If you silicone the box frame to the truck's floor it's going to be semi-permanent, the only was to get it out would be to bust it out. If you left the siliconed frame in the truck and decided to glass over the siliconed in frame, then you would never be able to get it out because the fiberglass would glue the frame to the truck permanently!

When people glass the bottom of sub boxes they use a barrier layer (plastic, tin foil, saran wrap, masking tape and car wax) to keep the fiberglass resin from sticking to the vehilce's floor, interior panels or carpet. If you don't use the barrier layer, you will never get the sub box back out. Plus it's one heck of a lot easier putting the fiberglass layers on when the box is out of the truck.

Yea, I understand that part. What I mean is I'm going to just make the frame not sealing it to the floor or anything) and see how it sounds, and if it sounds crappy I'll glass the bottom.

Would dynamatting the steel work instead of glassing?

I hate to say this, but, if the sub box isn't sealed it WILL sound bad and you could blow your subs. The sub box must be completely air tight, even vented or ported boxes must be sealed except for the port.

Dynamat is used to deaden sound, it will not make the floor of the truck strong enough to be used as a sub box, however, using Dynamat on the fiberglass inside the box is a good idea as it will dampen the fiberglass, it helps cancel noise inside the sub box.
