I've got a couple questions about installation of stereo equipment in a Quad Cab. I've got a 2004 QC Dakota. I've got a pile of audio equipment I've collected over the last few months from trades and winning a contest (three Diamond Audio amps, two DA subs, and a DA 5 1/4 component set). They're just collecting dust in my basement, so I figure I should take a stab at using some of them.

The sub issue is beaten to death and then some on here. I'm undecided what to do. I've got two different 10's. If I decide I can sacrifice a flip-up drivers side seat in the back, I'll probably just get the MTX box, figuring one the DA subs isn't too deep for it.

Components aren't a big deal, easy enough to install in the doors. I had a question about the Q-Logic kick panels, though. They list fitment as 2000-2003, not 2004. Is that a catalog mistake, or is there a difference between 2003 and 2004 where a 2004 won't fit?

The big question I've got is what people do with their amps. Searches on here haven't turned up much information. There is no space under my driver seat, as its a power seat. The hump in the floor under the passenger seat makes it unlikely anything other than a very small amp would fit there. The molded humps in the carpet under the rear seats make it equally unlikely to fit the amps there. I've got a 7104 800w 4 channel amp, a D3 600w 1 channel amp and a D3 400w 2 channel amp.

If I only amp the fronts, I can either use just the 7104, bridging two channels for the sub, or I have to squeeze the two D3 amps in. The 7104 is a very large amp (25"x11"x3"), so fitting behind the rear seats or under the passenger seat seems unlikely. The two channel D3 is much smaller, 12x8.5x2.5, but the single channel is a good amount bigger, almost 16x8.5x2.5.

So how have people dealt with this? I need to keep things invisible and looking stock. I think the smaller D3 amp could maybe squeeze under the drivers seat bottom if it turns out I don't fold that seat up anyway, but I worry about cooling under that seat. Anyone have problems with that before?

Has anyone looked at using the open space in the rear seat bottoms? It seems to be mostly hollow. Its just a thought.

I'm kind of stumped on it, though. I'm used to having some trunk space for this sort of thing, or more useable space under the front seats in cars.

i've had people ask that if the subs/box was an upgrade sound system option. cause it matches the seats

It sounds like you've run into the creative fun required to properly stereo-ize a QC!

In my 02 QC, I have a 4-channel amp under the front passenger seat (RF 600a4). It's placed with the front side up against the left-to-right hump in the floor. The end-cap on the front of the amp has been removed so that it will fit. This has the added benefit of being able to adjust the gains and crossovers by looking under the front seat and turning a screwdriver. The back of the amp has the end cap in place to cover the output wiring from stray feet and other stuff. The back of the amp just peeks out from under the front seat.

My sub amp is placed under the driver's side rear seat. As my sub (single SoloBaric 8), is behind this seat, the seat does not fold up unless I remove the seatback.

Initially, this sub amp's placement was temporary as I thought that I would have air flow and subsequent heat problems. When this happened, I would move this amp behind the passenger rear seat. I never had heat problems, so the amp is still under the driver's side rear seat.

The only other place that I can see to put amps would be on the rear wall.

So I am going to install a Rockford 10 behind my seat tonight. I have a small temporary (but could be a long temp) amp that fits under the seat.

Tell me if this is right.

*I will remove the seat completely.
*Bolt the amp to the floor.
*place the box against the back wall and mark where the box touches, remove it. Cut out the carpet so the box can fit into it.
*And then just bolt the seat back?

Is it correct that I will have a tough time getting a 4th bolt back on, if at all?

I already have the amp under the seat but the box is just on the floor behind the drivers seat taking up space.

And I know it will not be a foldable seat anymore.

You shouldn't have overheating problems with the amps mounted under the seats if you keep the AC/heater moving air to your feet. I have a RF 301S and Orion 435 mounted under the front seats and haven't had problems, but I keep air moving across them.

However, you can blow up an amp under the seat if you don't keep air moving across it. I toasted a RF Punch 150 on a road trip because I forgot to keep the AC moving air to my feet. After 2 hours of cranking the stereo, the sub cut out and a god awful smell of burned transistors and caps errupted from below the drivers seat. After repairing the Punch 150 I never forgot to keep air moving across the amps.

BiggRedd, you can also just remove the seat back if that gives you enough room to work. One bolt on each side of the seatback.

Lurkin,
I removed my seat yesterday and just set the box there. WOW. Scary. I am trying to put a 10 back there. I am assuming that is a little much. I ended up putting the seat back on til I get more info.

So I can trim the back wall for an extra inch or so and then you are saying I can take part of the upholstery on the back of my seat for additional clearance? hmm. Not a bad idea. It wasn't that hard removing the seat in general. I wonder if that truck box (with a 10) would fit like that.

If you are talking about the driver's side rear seat, then propoer airspace for a ten may be problematic.

My 8 is in a Q-logic truck box that just squeezes into that space with no trimming. Works fine for me, but I an a SQ guy, and not after the SPLs.

You can trim the seatback's upholstery for more room, but there is a steel rod that runs across the seat back right about in the middle.

When I was talking about the seatback in the response above, I was referring to removing just the seatback instead of the entire seat. In my opinion, it's easier to work just the seatback into position as opposed to the entire seat.

Lurkin,
Thanks for answering the questions. But I do have another. How can you mess with just the seat back. Don't you have to remove all the bolts to slide the seat up and out of those hooks?

Also, not sure if I read this correctly on another post but is it possible to push that rod on the back seat in a little to provide just a touch of extra space? Or will that affect the customers back?

One last question. Do you know how wide you box is that just slides in? I bought a truck box and it looks gigantic back there.

Thanks again.

I just put the mtx thunderform back there with a 10" mtx sub. I tried building boxes but it just wouldn't work. I was trying to get a sub right behind the rear seat on the drivers side. My 10" mtx with a jbl 180.2 putting about 360 watts to it bridged sounds great. I am thinking that is about th only 10" box that will fit back there unless you really do some customizing. I have heard of 8's fitting back there and even someone on here had 3 8's back there. These were behind all the seats in the back.

You can just remove the back of the seat but I found that really hard to get a wrench in there to do it. I just took the whole seat out. Maybe someone has a tip on how to do just the back part of the seat. It is just held on by some torx screws, but I couldn't get the wrench back there to just undo them.

The box I have is a Q-logic QLT-.3508, you'll need to look up the measurements as I'm not going to take the seat out to re-measure :-) It fits right between the seat frame with no room to spare, side-to-side or front-to-back.

To remove just the seat back, take the plastic cover off of the door side of the seat and remove the torx bolt (big torx headed b$%ch). On the other side, unless you take the other seat out (defeats the purpose!), you can put a torx-headed socket in place, then grab the socket with a pair of vice-grips to get the bolt turning. Or you can grab the bolt head directly with the vice graps, your choice. Once those two bolts are removed, pull the seatback up to clear the hooks on back and it's out.

As far as bending the bar, I don't know, I haven't done it. but I would suspect that if it's bent much, the passenger is going to feel it as there is not much space to work with.

I also liked the idea of the MTX box, but didn't want to pay that much and didn't want the MTX subs. At the time, I had heard that the box was too shallow for some 10 subs. Although there have now been posts that discount that rumor.
