Subject: Vented Vs. Ported

Message:
Difficulty-wise, how hard is it to build a vented box compared to a ported box? Also, how do you figure the size of vent? For example, I got a sub that calls for a 3” diameter/ 7” long port… how would I convert that to vent size? Surely it’s not an inch wide slot ½” tall and 7” long? I’m up for the challenge, but if port/vent placement is going to be a hard thing to figure then I will just stick with a sealed box. Thanks, S~

Vented=Ported, different names same enclosure

I think you are referring to the shape of the port.
Port area is the key to conversion---

But honestly do a google search for WINISD
Input your woofers T/S parameters and the volume of the box. It will tell you your port size. You can choose either round or rectangular shaped ports.
Oh be sure to read the help file it you cannot figure it out.

As long as the rectangular port has the same cross-sectional area as the circular, you'll be fine. So, the area of the 3" diameter port would be πr2 = π * (1.5)2 = 7.07 in2. So a possible rectangular port size would be 2.2 in. by 3.2 in, for a 7.04 in2 port area.

of course, if you use most box-modeling software, you can put in your own port size and it'll calculate the proper length for you.
