Subject: 8"s in rear of CC Dak

I'm psyched now!

I just got off the phone both with JL Audio and with my local sound shop. I just tried (unsuccessfully) to install an MTX Thunderform in my truck. The brackets that attach the rear passenger side seat to the truck don't line up with the slots in the Thunderform.

However....

I talked to the local audio shop about the possibility of widening the rear speaker slots to accept an 8" sub, and he said not only is that possible, but a guy who works there HAS a Dak and did just that. He has 4 JL Audio 8IB4's installed, and according to him they hit harder than his 2 10"s used to hit. That's saying something. Total cost of wiring/installation/materials would be about $300, and that's not too shabby. Much better than $560 for ONE 8" under the seats. :-)

this sounds awesome!... i have the thunderform, but i was wondering if i could have this done in the back panels to add a little more bass to the system... have you heard the guys system, or have you had it done to your truck yet? i was thinking maybe run some powerful components powered by a good amp up front, or maybe add some qform kickpanels too. wouldn't that be a sick ass setup? the fun part would be finding good amps that would fit under the seats to power all this. i remember seeing a custom installation where someone had amps actually built into the bottoms of the rear bench seats. so many possibilities...

Well considering the fact that by installing 8"s in the rear speaker locations, you WOULDN'T have to get a Thunderform, you could very easily find all the room in the world to put amps below the seats. Might have to alter the tray, though. To answer your 2 questions, yes, I did hear his system, and for 8"s they ROCK. They hit almost as hard as the 10" Thunder 6000's I used to have, if done right. You'd want the JL Audio 8ID4's.

As far as the amps go, I had a Kenwood KAC-729 running the 2 10's in my old Thunderform, and they VERY easily fit under my driver's side seat with room to spare. Don't know how hung up on a certain kind of amp you are, but the Kenwood was more than sufficient for me.

my buddy has a pair of 8w0's he's getting rid of. do you think those might work? whats the diff between those and the 8ID4? if i got them from him, i could maybe get a rockord fosgate 600.4 to run those two subs as well as a set of components.

You could use the 8W0's I'm sure but they will sound NOWHERE near as good as the 8ID4's. The 8ID4's are specifically made for free-air applications, whereas the 8W0's are not.
