Hi,
Please forgive me for asking but...
I have an 01 QC with the Infinity CD w/steering wheel controls. I would like to keep the head unit.
I researched this site and determined that Infinity Reference 605c for the fronts and 652.5is for the rears are the way to go (Thanks JMII).

My question is what amp to get and how to configure it? Any wiring tips would also be appreciated.

I would like to pull the existing amp out.

Please advise with recommendations AND opinions

Thanks in advance
Maddog

Oh, also does anyone know what the head unit's power specs are? This is wishful thinking, but is it pre-amp level?

It is NOT pre-amp level. The factory Infinity amp (when equipped) is line level input..

How come you want to keep the orginal unit when you plan on doing such a large upgrade to the rest of the system.

Just for clarification 'line-level' is RCA Jack level (aka per amp level). 'speaker output' is what the stock infinity amp uses. The stock unit is putting out at speaker level which the amp uses as an input.

I suppose you could pick up a 4 channel amp that can use speaker level inputs but it seems that you are really degrading the system by not replacing the head unit. Since most aftermarket head units have line-level outputs.

If you concened about retaining your steering wheel controls for the head unit you can always purchase an aftermarket adapters that will allow you to use the contols. That's what I have for my Kenwood head unit.

Zardoz,

First, thank you for the clarification on terms. With regard to this, I was going to use line converters to convert the speaker level output to pre-amp levels, then use an amp with pre-amp inputs.

Now, you are correct in thinking that I wanted to keep my steering wheel controls. Based on this, could you describe your experience in installing and using the adapter (also what model is it). I am also thinking that the stock head unit will sound okay. If not, then all I will need to do is replace that.

Thanks

Maddog,
Check out this sight.
This guy has a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but he changed the system and left the head unit alone. Lists all the parts for installation.

I hope I don't get flamed but I am just not a fan of stock equipment. I'm sure for some it's just fine but I don't believe it puts out the full dynamic range.

I find the sound when using line output convertors to be somewhat compressed. You don't get the real lows or the upper end either. Kinda makes CD's sound like a FM radio station.

As for the steering wheel controlles I have one of these http://www.pac-audio.com/products/swi.htm
Installation wasn't too bad. It's a little tricky finding a place to put the IR sensor where it will work yet to be too obvious.

Hope this helps,
Zardoz

Bowtie,

Thanks for the link. It helped alot!

Zardoz,

No worries about the flames. I was asking for opinions and you gave yours. I will try the line converters with the stock head unit feeding either a hifonics 4400 or Alpine V series, they'll both put out about 45-50W per. It'll push a set of infinity reference 605's and Kappa 652.5i's. If it doesn't sound right to me, I'll replace the Head Unit and only be out the cost for the line converters. If it still doesn't sound right, then woof woof.

A question, is the Zeus 4400 underpowered for the speakers I've chosen?

Everyone please feel free to comment on my PROPOSED setup.

Thanks,
Thanks
