Subject: Speaker wires which one is ground?
IP: Logged

Message:
I tried looking through the archives but couldnt get an exact answer. Took my stock speakers out and on both the left and right front are green, and a black wire with a red stripe. I just need to know which is the ground. Its for a 2000 dakota without the infinity sound system.

Thanks

Neither is "ground." The speakers are driven differentially, and both wires carry signal. If you're installing new speakers, then it's more critical that all speakers are connected with the same polarity. If they're all connected in reverse it'll still sound fine.

ok, thanks for the reply. So from what i understand they are both the same? So as long as i use the green wire as pos on each side in the front it should be fine? or should i hook both up and ground it to the door somewhere?

Also, how do you guys run wires to the door? Ive checked under the dash where the wires seem to run through the rubber boot and there is a solid conector there.

Thanks,
Ryan

No...daksport is right.

One wire is a ground. All you have to do is use a multimeter. Check the resistance between the negative speaker terminal that is not used when bridged and the ground of the amp. They are all connected together. It will read 0 ohms or very close.

The signal must have a reference to find the amplitude of the wave.

When an amp is bridged or on a mono amp, half of the wave is inverted which allows for twice the difference in the two signals. Instead of the reference being the ground, it is now the exact wave flipped upside down.

Nevermind...I'm a retard.

I just realized we were talking about head units which are internally bridged.

BTW - a small battery will tell you which is pos and negative.

If the battery's pos and neg is matched up with the speakers, the cone will move forward.

No, he wasn't. Head units and most OEM amps have differential outputs. Internally they may either float or be referenced to ground, but neither output is tied directly to ground.

That's true for a single-ended amplifier. His is not.

When an amp is bridged or on a mono amp, half of the wave is inverted which allows for twice the difference in the two signals. Instead of the reference being the ground, it is now the exact wave flipped upside down.

But he's talking about OEM equipment. Head units and most OEM amps use BTL amplifier ICs, which stands for "Bridge-Tied Load." IOW, for each channel there are two amp blocks which are then bridged into one load.

Just Don't Ground either wire .
will cause output of stereo to blow .
Unless you are installing a LOW power
aftermarket stereo ....

Isn't the reference on those head units ~6 volts?

What do stock radios from the factory use? If they use the bridged config, why do they usually put out less power? I always hear 6-8 rms per channel whereas an aftermarket can do 14-18?

It seems like with the same supply voltage ~12 volts and a speaker with the same impedence, it would be the same power.

V^2/R = P

????

I know, that's why I said "he wasn't." Had I not seen that, I'd have said "he isn't." I probably should have taken the time to be clearer.

There's a DC bias on both outputs that is around 6 volts. Since it's applied to both sides of the load, it basically "cancels out."

the cheap-ass factory radios generally use low-cost power ICs or, in some cases, discrete single-ended output stages. The mid-level and "premium" factory head units use much the same BTL power ICs that aftermarket heads use, so real-world power is roughly equal. Factory units are typically rated lower since they're rated at 2 or 3 % THD, whereas aftermarket units are rated at 10%. Furthermore, the high-power aftermarket units (think Alpine's V-Drive and the like) use a DC-DC converter to boost the supply voltage to 17 volts.

It seems like with the same supply voltage ~12 volts and a speaker with the same impedence, it would be the same power.

a lot of it depends on what the rail voltage is.

Thanks for the replys!! Im not using the stock deck lol got rid of that a long time ago. Well i decided to get an amplifer to run the fronts and will run all new wires from the crossovers to the speakers.

Thanks.

Did anyone answer the original question?? I've been searching for the same thing.

I just installed new speakers and each at each speaker location, the clip had a wire with a red stripe. I used this as "ground". I have an aftermarket Head unit, but didn't think to check the wires on it before installing the speakers. I used a harness adapter when installing the head unit, so that is "correct" per the package directions.

Anyone know if the red stripped wire is "ground"??

Thanks,

Joe

The way Chrysler defines speaker polarity is as such:

Place the speaker face down, with the connector pointing at you. The terminal on the left is positive.
