Unless you want to spend a lot of money to have a custom box built or you want to put a huge box on top of your back seat the thunderform is the only way to go. I have had several different setups in previous cars and the thunderform sounds just as good as most of them. You really need 300-500 watts for the MTX subs cause they suck up the power. Check out ebay, they sell them new on there for real cheap. I bought mine there.

Do a search on this site for MTX Thunderforms... I'm sure you would find a wealth of information on the topic that way.

I have the Thunderforms in my truck which I am powering with a Soundstream Reference 300 pushing, you guessed it, 300 watts. They sound pretty good. I prefer the sound of my old solarbarics but most people that hear them think they sound great and say I'm too picky. They definitely play loud enough for most people, past my threshold for pain for sure. If you don't have them crossed over low enough though they sound really loud and boomy due to close location to your head when you are sitting in the truck. Any subs would have this problem though.

Im running a Kenwood bridged to 300watts RMS...I originally had a Sony amp which was only pumping 200 watts into it...The bigger amp has mad a difference and Im sure if I threww a 500 watt amp of a good quality they would sound even better, but Im pretty satisfied with the sound.

That actually makes me feel better, because I bought a Kenwood amp to push the Thunderform subs, and my amp (bridged) puts out 300 watts RMS, so I believe I have the same amp you have. Good to know :-)

Ah....I have the KAC-729, but it's just a shade less powerful than the 829, and produces 300 watts RMS bridged as well so I'm sure it will produce about the same. Good to know.

Actually, if I remember right when shopping around, the 2 amps were rated identicle....the ony difference was the 729 had bigger dimensions and the 829 has a cool little blue power light...check the dimensions on the 729...If you plan on mounting under the seat, you may have a prob...the 829 just makes it....The 729 will phisically fit, but if you have the manual seat adjuster, there is a bar under the seat that will interfere with a bigger amp and it will be unable to lock into position meaning the seat will just slide foward and backward at will...(been there done that)

I've checked, and the KAC-729 does indeed fit under there. I was able to adjust the seat just fine, but to be safe I will probably have them install the amp under the passenger seat, because it almost never gets adjusted. I'm taking it to the Circuit City where I live, and a guy there (who is also giving me a big discount) has never done me wrong yet, so I am leaving it up to him to decide where to put it. He's done Dakotas before, and has also done this amp before, so he said we'll take a look and see what we can do. Thanks for the tip though.

Just FYI for anyone who wants to know, I got my system installed Saturday, and the Kenwood KAC-729 amplifier fits just fine under my driver's side seat. I have manual seat adjust and at the 'lowest' point there's still a good half inch or so of clearance. The amp is about 2-5/8" high by 9" wide by about 13" long or so.

Ya know what? I think that there is more room under the drivers seat than there is under the pass seat...when I tried to install an amp (same dimensions...diff brand) under the pass seat, the adjuster bar rubbed...I wonder if there is more room under the driver side?

I bet you're right. I could be wrong but I know that in almost every vehicle you see nowadays, there seem to be more 'goodies' for the driver's side than the passenger's side (i.e., lumbar support, power adjust, so on and so forth). Maybe the absence of all that junk on mine gives me more room. Who knows. I'll ALSO say that the Kenwood amps have less 'stuff' on top. F'rinstance, the MTX amps have those 'ribs' on top and the California amps are bowed up in the middle. Kenwoods are pretty flat.

Yes and no. I'm happy in that the box sounds great. Might have to do a bit of work to work out the rattles, but that goes for ANY install.
I'm NOT happy in that I just realized that the Thunderform is not made, evidently, for the 2002 Dodge Dakota CC. One of the holes that allows the seat brackets to fold back down is about an inch off from where it should be; therefore I can not lower my seat all the way. This means I either have to a) cut a 'slice' out of the box (which I do NOT want to do, because that would turn it into a 'ported' enclosure), or b) take it out. I just talked to the guys at MTX, and am a bit ticked. Evidently the Dakotas that are being manufactured in Detroit (or wherever) have a different seat bracket placing than the ones in Mexico. They neglected to tell me this when I called to ask whether or not it would fit.

That being said, it will fit a 1997 to 2001 Dak CC just fine.

I just bought an mtx enclosure for my 2002 dodge dakota. I heard someone say it will not fit because of the spacing of one of the seat brackets. What should I do? I really don't want to gut the back seat.

My thunderform did the same thing all i did was pull off the back panel and losend the nuts holding the seat brackets on and slid them up. it a sloted area. now mine sit almost totally flat with nothing on them. there up maybe an 1/8 inch. if your brackets aren't sloted where they bolt to the back wall. take them off and grind a slot in them. this should take care of any problems.
