Subject: steering wheel audio controls

Message:
I am thinking about putting in the thunderforms in the truck, but I also want to put in a new deck, and I have the audio controls on the steering wheel.
Is there a special hookup to the stock cd/cassete deck that only works for the stock deck? I don't want to lose my steering wheel audio controls at all, even if that means keeping the stock deck. Any help would be appreciated.

Yep. the steering wheel controls talk to the radio over the vehicle bus (I think 2001s use CCD bus), and no aftermarket head unit directly supports it. There are adapters out there that will translate the steering wheel control inputs to something the aftermarket radio will understand. I think Soundgate makes quite a few.

You have to buy a unit that taps into the steering column wires and converts the signal to IR. This unit sends the command to your new head unit by way of a IR remote. Here is the cheapest I have found it.

So if I get this adapter, will the tap to the steering wheel controls be already hooked up to the stock deck? and I'm guessing I have to find a deck that has an IR input coming from the adapter into the deck? and last, this sounds like a dumb question, but I have no experience in installation, but where does the adapter go? I'm guessing there's room for it behind the deck area or something. Thanks again for the help.

Nice installation of the SWI-x bro, you got a pretty cool website too, had to add it to my favorite dakota sites. Good work man, the installation is detailed enough that it takes the intimidation factor down to 10%....good info.

you guys should check out his site

It is not my site, just one that I found trying to answer the same questions for myself.

I've been thinking about getting a new cd player that plays mp3's too. I'm wondering if they will install the SWI-X adapter for my steering wheel controls at the local Cartoys, or Magnolia Hi-Fi, anyone know? I don't have the time to be messing with this and I don't want to mess up anything. Any advice for a non-do-it-yourselfer? good thread though.

I have the SWI-X in my dakota. I did about the same installation as dodgeboy.net. The only real difference with mine was the wires were not long enought to do what is shown on that site. I had to splice in some extra wire to get the length I needed to mount it in the overhead console. It wasn't hard, only 2 wires. Other than that, my install was the same as dodgeboy so you can follow it for directions if you need. It is accurate.

The unit works great, but is not quite as responsive as the factory controls. You can't just tap the buttons. You have to push them down solid to get it to send the signal. It is not a very big complaint, and was well worth it to have my steering wheel controls working again.
