Subject: Club Cab subs in stock location?

has anyone tried installing 8" subs where the coaxles are in a club cab?
Comments?
To me looks like you only have to widen the hole a little..then seal off the "ports".
and of course verify speaker magnet depth...but looks to me like could extend the depth with a custom mount.

I don't want a big sub box on my back seat.

why would you want to is the question? it would rattle the crap out of the side pannels and you would lose your rear fill....

well i could reinforce the side panels i mount the speakers to...maybe bolt on some silicon coated 1/4" plywood...maybe spray the inside of the space with bedliner coating.

the space behind the speaker looks of sufficient size..looks like a sub box to me.

why would i need rear fill when subs are back there.

again..i don't want a sub box on my back seat..i use those...yet i need thump bass beyond what a coaxle will do.

I agree with CJ, I wouldn't want to loose the rear fill either. I turned off my rear speakers to see what it sounded like and it ruined the imaging of the stereo, front speakers were blasting away. If your looking at putting subs in the side panels, why not go below the stock 6.5" rear speakers? There's a lot of room in the side panels below the rear speakers , surely enough for some 8's, maybe shallow 10's.

The only problem would be constructing an enclosure in the confined space that was air tight and very rigid. If a sub is put in a box that's not air tight and rigid the sub is going to sound like crap, even a ported enclosure needs to be air tight except for the port. You would need to fiberglass the heck out of the enclosure's top bottom and sides in the side panel to make a good home for the sub. If the enclosure flexs at all by pushing on it, the sub will also be able to make it flex, not good.

If your worried about space in the CC Dak go with a Thunderform. It houses 2-10's and replaces the factory tool tray. I didn't want to part with $200 and didn't like loosing all the space below the rear seats, so I built MDF/fiberglass boxes for 2-10's below the rear seats. Still enough room between the boxes for the jack, oil, jump cables and a cd changer with the seats down in the stock location. You wouldn't know the boxes are there except the front of the rear seats are up an extra inch and the filler panel is carpeted. Cost about $50 in materials and a weekend.

Putting subs in the side panels could be done, but it would be a major pain in the azz. Don't think I would attempt it since subs can go below the rear seats easily.

do you have to lift the seats to hear the subs?

Nope, I have releifs in the boxes and filler panel like the Thunderform's so the air pressure has a path to follow. I also have the boxes designed so there's about 1" between the top of the sub and bottom of the seat. The seats obscuring the subs doesn't have much effect on them and I think it sounds better with the seats down. I just wouldn't cram the speakers right up against the seat, and you definately wouldn't want the subs to hit the seat while thumpin.

Bass is non-directional, so you could have the subs facing upward, downward or sideways and hear them perfectly fine. This is why you can hear the ricers coming from miles away with the bass cranked.
